Show I Yuri- - June' 4 Letters... The editorial board seems to have indulged fully in this behavior. Math 110 is not "upper level" anything-- - it is entry level college work approximately on a par with English 201 for degree of mastery. The old requirement (Math 101) was second year high school algebra. Somehow the board also seems to have developed the opinion that the necessity for numeracy has decreased over time-- - in fact the opposite is true... I would ask that the Sun take its responsibility for. balanced accurate reporting as serious as the faculty on the GE committee took the responsibility for determining the appropriate level of math literacy for Dixie College graduates. Gary Mort, Chemistry Editors note: Dear Editor: am writing in response to a recent article (Math at Dixie New Requirements) and a recent opinion piece (Cancelling out students' problems with math problems) which appeared in the Dixie Sun regarding the new math GE requirement at Dixie College. My first concern deals with the article. While it has become common journalistic practice to report one side of an issue, it does not seem appropriate that students of journalism be taught such techniques. Back in my misty past I nave two years of experience as a writer, layout person, and copy editor fdr a campus paper. We were taught, and I believe, that responsible journalistic practice requires careful research and presentation of all sides of an issue. In failing to interview a single math instructor, the ' Sun's reporter clearlv failed to meet this requirement. The opinion piece which appeared this week heightened my concern. There is a broad trend in this country to value self congratulatory, puerile opinion as highly as carefully researched rational arguments. I required before you can enter That is because mathematics is the common tongue of scientists in all fields. You can just as well do without it and try to understand the world around you above the most rudimentary level as go to Japan and discuss Imanuel Kant with one of the natives without knowing a lick of Japanese. But I got the feeling that most of the editorial has less to do with requirements as much as it had to do with the writer's personal fear and hatred of mathematics. have trouble believing that such an editorial would have ever been published (at least in that format) if a new art or music requirement had been established. When the writer h suggested that a major could get by with only a remedial knowledge of mathematics, he or she was issuing their personal endorsements of ignorance, and saving that it's okay to practice educational bigotry against some form of learnit. 1 non-mat- ing. y While I agree that a person can get through left just by being able to do such things as being able to figure out the sales tax on a box of Twinkies, and fill their car with gas (and wonder why it's so darn expensive... oh well, not my problem), while knowing nothing of Bach's Sonatas, or natural catenaries, also know that there are some people who are the movers and shakers of society. People who , major or not, have enough numerical and scientific background to understand how or if CFC's destroy the ozone, contemplate the nuances of the nuclear energy debate, speculate at the factors necessary to reduce the trade deficit and balance the national budget, and, most importantly, those who understand enough to know whether or not to believe the next researcher who somberly informs the televisionviewing public that the filling in their Twinkies is killing thousands of people each year. Once again, Dixie College, in its own little way, is striving to improve the lives of its students. The opportunity is there... mv suggestion to the editorial board of the Dixie Sun is that they get off their collective "voice" and take it. whole-heartedl- Responses should take into consideration that the opinion was commentary on the article, "Math at Dixie new requirements" about the math requirements. This is why all material quoted was taken directly from the article and not directly researched and quoted. This would make it safe to assume that" ...carefully researched rational apply, even when writing letters to the Editor. 4, PflTCtifiS of Iris and Violets Flower Shoppe VOwiiofcel Gardon ,ys' 374 E.
