WINTCH SUN NEWS SERVICES THE DIXIE SUN 49ers have Super Bowl in the bag Let's talk Super Bowl. That's right, the NFC's stomping grounds over the AFC. Although the name implies that it's to be a "super" game with a "super" matchup, the real "super" matchup was the NFC championship last week. It was the most exciting, most anticipated game of the year (that is, if you throw out the first five minutes). In the AFC, the Chargers pulled off a great goal-lin- e stand in the last few seconds to ensure the win, and the meaty bonus each player received. I lowever, the Chargers don't have a chance against the 49ers. In fact, the line has already favored San Francisco by up to 21 points. Let's look at the Niners one more time. What a defense they have, led by "Neon Deion" Sanders. This is the same defense that forced three interceptions of Troy Aching-maand left him on his butt more times than he was standn, ing. Thanks for the memories. Cowboys. Maybe if you get a new owner, you'll have another chance to take it all home in January once agian. Now, let's look at the 49er offense. Steve Young ... enough said. After Joe left, many said Steve couldn't take the team all the way. Well, Joe, sorry to say, but Steve has taken them there. No disclamer to Joe Montana. He was a great quarterback. However, "was" is the key word in that last phrase. Joe, it's time to move on, buddy. You just don't have anything else to prove. Steve passed you by, and the only way to stay on top is to etire. Then, you just might m, ke it in to the Hall of Fame on the first try. Brent C. Wintch is sports columnist for The Dixie Sun. Dixie's Lady Rebels moved up in the Scenic West Athletic Conference standings with Iasi weekend's wins against College of Eastern Utah and Colorado Northwestern Community College. On Friday, Dixie traveled to Price and defeated CEU Jessica Cooper led the Rebels in scoring with 18 points. 7 A decisive win against CNCC on Saturday highlighted the Rebs' weekend. Dixie led by only three points near the end of the half before Courtney Harlen put up a long to bring the Lady Rebels' lead to six. In the second half, Dixie outscored CNCC by 25 points The Lady Rebs are now As a chorus of "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" rings out in the St. George air this spring, it may be coming from the Dixie College campus. The baseball and softball seasons are approaching, and Rebel fans will now be able to enjoy the convenience of a field on campus. Before the new complex was conceived, home games for the mens baseball team were played at Elk's Field, half a mile west of campus. 75-4- Women's games were plaved at the city Little League baseball field near Dixie High School. Because of the distance from campus, attendance was always poor. Sherrie Titus, coach of the women's softball team, said most students didn't even know that Dixie had a team. Gordan Jolly, coach of the men's baseball team, and Titus are excited for the start of the season and the added publicity for both teams. Titus belives that the location of the new complex, on the south end of campus just east of Hansen Stadium, is ideal. Many of the student housing facilities are nearby, and some students will be able to watch a game from their dorm rooms. The first home baseball game is Feb. 18, and softball is scheduled to begin in late March. In November 1990, the building of the complex was announced and named "Hurst Field" after Bruce lurst, a former Dixie student and major league pitch1 er. Utah Valley and Ricks College top the rankings, followed by Dixie in third place. Overall, Dixie has a 13-- 2 record.
