J Bv Andrew Pinckney Sun News Editor By Sharon Binkley Sun Features Editor The fall movie season is in full swing, and the latest release from blockbuster movie producer Joel Silver, Demolition Man, blows up the competition. Silver's credits also include the Lethal Weapon e director Marco Brambilla in for this series, and he brought slamming action flick starring Sylvester Stallone and Wesley Snipes. Stallone (Cliffhanger, Oscar) plays John Spartan, a gung-hcop who will stop at nothing to catch a ruthless, psychopathic criminal, Simon Pheonix, played excellently by Snipes. The movie begins with a dismal view of a 1996 Los Angeles, consumed by violence and chaos and under the complete control of Pheonix. Spartan whose reputation for always catching the criminals but also demolishing something in the process, attempts to rescue hostages n held by Pheonix, fails and is blamed for their deaths. Both are sentenced to a where they are frozen until 2032, awakened to resume the battle in a future that isn't ready for either of them. Stallone is back in magnificent form, thrashing the enemy and destroying nearly everything he touches. He also adds comic relief, mocking the futuristic L.A. that has become sweet and congenial and completely opposite from the anger ridden society he is Demolition Man stars Stallone as John Spartan , a muscle-boun(of course), ruthless cop who thoroughly enjoys putting psychopathic criminals behind bars. Stallone, like in every other one of his movies, has to beat his ultimate challenge, who so happens to be the world's most evil criminal Simon Phoenix, played by Wesley Snipes ("Passanger 57," "Rising Sun"). The movie begins in the year 1996. Los Angeles is under the chaotic control of Phoenix. Spartan, who will stop at nothing to capture Phoenix, goes to Phoenix's headquarters, an abandoned warehouse, to make Phoenix give him the location of 30 hostages held captive from a bus he hijacked. Yet Phoenix does not appreciate Spartan's unwelcome visit and sets the whole place up in flames. Spartan and Phoenix survive .(who would ever guess), but unknown to Spartan all the hostages were in the building also, and he (Spartan) is held responsible for their deaths. So the deviant criminal Phoenix and the negligent cop Spartan are both sentenced to (because in the future all convicted criminals are frozen). where their thoughts are reprogrammed. But someone reprograms Phoenix with the codes to all the technology of the future and a mission to kill. Spartan, on the other hand, learns to knit. first-tim- o crvo-priso- used to. Snipes who has demonstrated his action star prowess in both Passenger 57 and Rising Sun, retains his position at the top of the Hollywood's most wanted list. He is the perfect rival for Stallone, bent on destruction and power and hammering anything that steps in his way. This movie is a must see for action buffs or women who want to see Stallone's signature, bulging biceps. It opened on October 8, and is rated R for violence and language. Club Spotlight By Lisa Albrecht Sun Assistant Editor What can you get if you have 10 members, a constitution, and an advisor? A new club at Dixie College. Thats all it took for Swen Prior and Bryce Jenkins to organize the ski club which is new to the college this year. The club's Vice Pres. Bryce Jenkins said, So far, we have around 100 people signed up for the club. Over 70 people came to our first meeting. The cost to join the club is $15 which is hardly the amount of money students can save by being a member. We have joined our club with the ski club at S.U.U., so we can get twice the benefits. We get all of the benefits Cedar has, and they get the benefits we have, said Jenkins. One of the benefits club members 0 discount off receive is a anything in the store by showing their ski club card to participating sponsors in both Cedar and St. George. Other benefits include discounts on day passes and other ski gear at Brian Head as well as 15 off lodging. Through the club, students can buy season passes to Brian Head for $200 10-2- which are regularly $510, said Jenkins. Just by paying the $15 fee, you get a free day pass, a free lesson, and a free ski rental valid for a one month period, said Jenkins. Its a great deal for people who dont know how to ski, people who love to ski its a great deal for everyone, he added. d cyro-priso- Yes, knit! So when Phoenix escapes from the cryo holding facility, Spartan is released to capture him, because the LAPD are not "trained to deal with this kind of a situation ." version of "Rambo" and a sad waste of money, "Demolition Man" is just an over-rate- d but this time producer Joel Silver stole several ideas from "Total Recal" and the whole Demolition Man takes on the ending was taking from "Terminator 2."
