Show t New Student Union Building Plans Presented Center, which Mindy Schimbeck Editor in Chief following will services: house the Admissions, Registration, Financial Aids, Executive Council Is proud to present their proposal tor the new Student Union Building, which Is anticipated to be completed in 1994 If funds are raised. In years past, plans were made to remodel the existing Student The 1989-9- 0 Union Building. Yet after further discussion, the Institutional Council concluded that with the growth that is expected, even the remodeled building wouldnt be able to handle the numbers. That is when the idea was proposed to build a whole new building. Previous Executive Councils have discussed the idea of a new Student Center, but it wasnt until this year that the Council has actually taken any action. Dean Bill Fowler, and u 5 7 a Student Body President Shawn Coombs came up with the following proposal and designs. They would like to have a new three story building built in place of the building which now houses the Counseling Center, Security, and the Snack Bar. The new building Is expected to house many of programs which exist now, as well as many added features. A new cafeteria and snack bar will take the entire bottom floor. A lounge area Is also another added feature which will be put in for the students. The second floor will be the place where most of the student action takes place. This floor will house the Dean of Students office, the Activities and Student Body Office, a large type and computer room, equipment and storage rooms, a student work room, two conference rooms, rest rooms, the bookstore, the radio station, the newspaper and yearbook room, a barber and beauty shop, and also a 24 hour handy bank teller service. The top floor will be similar to the Sun Room which we have now, only larger. It will consist of a large room, a ball room, a lounge area, a TV room, and a game room. Two multi-purpo- other added features to the building will be a large open patio, and a twelve foot fountain. Along with the new building being built, the existing S.U.B. will be remodeled and turned into an Academic Service Scholarships, Personal Counseling, Academic advising, Permanent Records Office, Cashier, Placement, Career Center, High School Relations, Testing Center, Drug and Alcohol Program, Upward Bound, Public Relations, Publications and Paper Storage, and Graduation Offices. Two conference rooms, one large meeting room, and an instructional Computing Center will also be included. The main concern now for the Exec. Council is funding. The total cost of the new building has been estimated at 4.5 million dollars. The Council is now working on a plan In which the state will buy the now existing Student Center which will be turned into the Academic Service center. If this occurs, it will free the college of the bond they are now under, thus allowing the college to apply for another bond which will go towards the new building. The students are now capable of bonding 2.9 million dollars without increasing student fees. The balance of the money is projected to come from private Renowned Utah Artist's Drawings on Exhibit at Dixie St. George-Drawi- ngs traveling exhibition program. Stewarts early training began at the University of Utah, later he studied at the Art Students' League in New York, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Stewart's later work was influenced by such American regionalist artists as Thomas Hart Benton and Grant Wood. As a teacher, first in the public schools of Ogden and Salt Lake City, and then from 1938 to 1956 as chairman of the University of Utah Art Stewart influenced a generation of Utah artists. Stewart's traditional, realistic landsacapes show his belief that there is nothing more Interesting than what his eye observed. It n K l for 25 dollars. Each brick sold will have the owners name engraved upon it, and the brick will be put into the wall of the new center. The Exec. Council is looking forward to the many exciting things that will be happening with their proposal even though construction on the building wont even begin for two more years. Coombs said that there are many changes which will take place now In the existing S.U.B. He stated that the Snack Bar is now undergoing major reconstruction, and should be finished by Christmas. He also said that the Student Council will be moving next to the Snack Bar where the Counseling Center is now located. It is hoped that the students will be able to come to this new location to get with involved student government, and to just kick back and relax In i ji r. f The main entrance to the new Union Building, will face North, tovi the Library.
