Show Page 4 DIXIE SUN May 12, 1989 Campus i Rebel awards held to honor achievements at Dixie College Trade Mecham Staff Writer Rebecca Reheis, meteoro- logist of the KTVX anchor team, was the Mistress of Ceremonies for the Annual Dixie College Rebel Awards Program held in the Fine Arts Center last Friday evening. This program was held to honor the achievements and contributions of Dixie College students during the 1988-8- 9 academic year. The Entertainer of the Year Award was presented to Heidi Anderson. Other finalists in the Entertainer category were: Lanette Barfuss, Del Beatty, Von Christiansen, Paul Jensen, Patrice Prince, and Karis Rowley. Dave Eller received the Achievement of the Year Award. Martel Carter, Fran Lundahl, Kester Tapaha, Ken Bean, and Carl Cluff were also finalists in this category. Finalists in the Personality of the Year category were: Lanette Barfuss, Tecia Terresa Beatty, Finlinson, Jeff Lewis, Kris Moyes, and Collette Williams. Lanette Barfuss was the recipient of this award. Tracie Mecham received the Dixie Spirit Award. Other finalists in this category were: Rorque Valedictorian Duo Dixie College has named two Valedictorians for the 1989 Commencement Exercises, according to Dr. Max Rose, Academic Brad Esplin and Lisa Belliston have been selected to represent the Graduating Class of 1989. "Brad and Lisa are two of the top students I have ever had the pleasure to work with," said Rose. "In addition to their high academic standing, they have provided leadership and an example of hard work and dedication to all of the activities which have been held during their years at Dixie. It is an honor to have two such dedicated individuals represent our graduating class this year." Esplin is the son of Dario and Grace Esplin of St. ST. GEORGE George. He was born and raised here and graduated as Salutatorian of Dixie High School in 1985. He also served as Studentbody President for Dixie High and was named as the outstanding athlete his senior year. He first attended Dixie College in 1986 for two quarters before serving an LDS Mission in Puerto Rico. While at Dixie, Esplin has maintained a perfect 4.0 grade point average. He is involved in the Sigma Gamma Chi Fraternity and has served as it's president for the past year. He is also a member of the Phi Theta Kappa and LDSSA Council and was chosen as first attendant in the "Mr. Dixie" Competition for this year. Esplin indicated that he has always enjoyed school and said that his experiences at Dixie will have a great effect on his future. He plans to continue his education at the University of Utah where he will major inBiology and then apply for Medical School. Belliston is the daughter of Peter and Karen Belliston of Bountiful, Utah. She has served this year as Studentbody selected as a 1989 attendant, was chairman for the class officer and studentbody elections, and was the Career Day student chairman as well. She has been a member of the Dixie College Academic Council, was on the Participation '88 Committee and has been chairman of the Outstanding Students of the Quarter Committee this year. Additionally, Belliston has given service to the community through the "Adopted Grandmas" program where she visited the St. George Care Center on a weekly basis. She was a nominee for Rebel Awards Personality of the Year, Distinguished Service Award and Outstanding Sophomore Student. She has also maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA and is ranked at the top of her class in Calculus, Chemistry, Art and English. She graduated with high honors from Bountiful High in 1987. The Distinguished Service Award was presented to Patrice Prince. Other finalists for this award were: Lisa Belliston, Nate Alder, Dave Eller, Tammy McMullin, Kendrik Snow, and Hal Hiatt. Both Mark Roberts and Jennifer Scholar Caylor Jardine, Williams received Athlete Awards. Richard Dailey, Kenneth Last, and Greg Stokes were also finalists for this award. High Honor and Honor graduates were presented with certificates recognizing their achievement in academic excellence. The Valedictorian title was placed upon both Brad Esplin and Belliston. Jamison Moody was Lisa recog- nized as the Outstanding Freshman Student and received the Kit Bowler Memorial Scholarship. Other Outstanding Freshman finalists were: Duane Adams, Von Carlile, Cindy Christiansen, Don Leavitt, Stacie Stokes, and Lin Alder. The Outstanding Sophomore Student receiving a Rebel Award was Kendrik Snow. Nate Alder, Del Beatty, Lisa Belliston, Brad Esplin, Julie Kerr, and Patrice Prince were also finalists for the Sophomore Outstanding Award. College Jazz Ensemble as they performed some catchy tunes The Dixie College Chamber1 Choir delighted the audienct with two musical selections of the year awards banquet. It was an exciting evening for everyone involved. The banquet and the awards ceremony, very much resembled The Academy Awards. It began with a speech from Karis Rowley, which was in itself quite a treat. Then it went to the dinner. After dinner is when the real fun started, the time everyone had been waiting for the entire year. The awards portion of the program. First there was the special recognition awards, these were given to people who had to pull through at the roughest of times. The receivers of this honor were, Lanette Barfuss, Tod Stoneking, Randy Wangerin, Del Beatty, Jody Allred, to name a few. Then came best cameo role which went to Dancing Ed Crocket. Next was best child performance which went to Spencer Allen for his part in "The Nerd." unmet Brent Snow Gary Caldwell performed astounding trumpet duet. vocal solos. Eicher, Don Leavitt, Heidi Anderson, Charlene Love, Jody Allred, and Del Beatty. Further on in the program came Best actor and actress in a minor role, it went to Andy Jones, and Tammy Edwards. Best supporting actor was next Karis Rowley took this award home and it was well deserved for his role in "Pack of Lies." Jennifer Jones received Best supporting actress for her role as Bonnie in the fall quarter production of "Anything Goes." Break for another musical number and then back to the show.
