Not shown: HeiHi Anderson. 1 Forensics squad take golds and bronze in 1989 Trade Mecham Staff Writer The Dixie College Forensics squad spoke for two golds and five bronze at the 1989 Phi Rho Pi National Competition held in Concorde, California April Karis Rowley brought home a gold for his efforts in a mixed interpretation dealing with 'Perception' and a bronze for his prose interp. cut from 'Interview with a Vampire'. Another gold was awarded to Kristy Behunin for her prose interp. entitled 'Lawns'. Heidi Anderson described different aspects of poverty through a poetry interp. and received a bronze. Katrice Shamo also received a bronze for her informative speech on aspirin. Von Christiansen, a newcomer on the Dixie squad this year, took a bronze for his performance with his prose interp. Mr. Beelizy'. This is a super accomplishment for the ten member national squad. Other members attending nationals were: Danielle Hollingshead, Vanessa Campbell, Mindy Schimbeck, Tracie Mecham, and Cindy Carlile. This part of the squad will return to participate on the Dixie Forensics squad next year. Of course Mr. Donald Hinton and Mr. Michael Woodward, the coaches, attended Nationals to par- ticipate in judging other but most of all to support the squad. Robert Walquist, an alumnist to the squad also attended to help judge and support. The week was spent at the Concorde Hilton Hotel with Junior Colleges from all over the United States. Not only did the PK Rho Pi members relax, socialize, swim, and sleep at the Hilton, but this is also where the actual competi schools, tion took place. Most of the competition rounds took place in the hotel rooms. with a persuade about 'Gifted Children' and Katrice presented a persuasive speech on The Forensic talent shown by all competitors at Nationals was astounding. Not including the gold and bronze winning events from Dixie, here's a rundown of the events that competed at Nationals: The Rose' was given by Mindy while Vanessa presented an inform on 'Medieval Entertainment'. Katrice presented a Communication Living with Death' included: Karis , Mindy , Katrice , Von , Analysis dealing with the 'Stock Market' and Cindy gave an analysis on 'Walt Readers' Theatre entitled and Danielle. Tracie , Cindy and the one and only debate team from Dixie, survived the fierce debate competition in Ceda Team Debate. Tracie also competed in LD Ceda Debate. Civilian possession of handguns was the topic for national Ceda Debate. in Cindy competed Extemporaneous Speaking. She also competed in the Persuasive Speaking category with her Nutritional' speech. Kristy entered this category 'Endangered Species'. A Speech to Inform entitled 'The Disney'. Entering the category of Impromtu speaking was Von. Heidi going with 'Nothing', Kristy with 'Cockroaches', Vanessa with and Von with his 'Junk Truck' received a lot of laughs for their Speeches to Entertain. Two Duet Acts were taken to Nationals; the acts included: Mindy and Tracie with 'One Sunday 'Non-runnin- Afternoon', and Karis and Continued from page 7 |
