Show Student press Experienced student advises graduate hopefuls and with Dan Maxwell Alright, so Im a little older than a lot of you. And maybe I didnt get my high school diploma until way late in my life. But just last month, I completed the necessary 96 credits to acquire my Associate of Science Degree from Dixie College. And I have some thoughts Id like to share with you to help you get more from your time here at Dixie. First off, get your General Education classes out of the way. And dont worry about declaring a Major just yet. I think that youll find that you can greatly simplify your class schedule by concentrating on the required courses first. I realize that the last thing you want to face right now is that Chemistry or Economics class, especially 5 days a week. But youll have to do it sometime, a little creative registration, you should be able to space the hard classes out so as not to cut too deeply into your lifestyle. Which brings to mind another thing. Dont overload yourself. I have known a great many students who have had the notion that if they take a heavy load of classes (16 credits and above) each quarter, theyll graduate sooner. This is probably true, but remember, for every hour of class time, you can pretty well figure on spen- ding 2 hours doing the homework. This can have a real effect on your precious free time, especially around midterm. Any class counselor will tell you that 12 to 16 credits is a pretty full load. I recommend that you take it easy on yourself for the first little while, and then move up to the harder schedules as you hit your stride. During your tenure at Dixie, you will more than likely be required to write several term and research papers. I recommend that you take your English classes right off the bat. Youll find that the instruction that you receive from these teachers will help you complete the papers youll be doing in other classes. Now, about your Major. As you mightve read in the Spring Quarter schedule, it is possible to graduate from Dixie without a Major (an Associate Degree in General Education). But if you plan on continuing your studies later on at a four year school, you might be ahead of the game if you complete some preliminary courses here at Dixie. For example, my field of interest, Mass Communications, was one of the easier Majors to complete. But there were still WRITE TO THE EDITOR some courses I was required to complete before I could enter into further studies at, say, the University of Utah. Since several of the classes were being offered here at Dixie, and were TRANSFERABLE, I found it very important to do a little coordinating (with the help of my adviser) to include these courses in amongst my schedule. This way, I was able to build the foundation for my Bachelors Degree while still working on my Associates. Above all, I want to stress that it is very possible to have fun at college and get an education, too. It only takes a little forethought and a lot of schedule planning to make it happen for you. I only wish someone had told ME about it sooner.
