It not until World War II that the income tax was expanded to cover most American Families. Today, the personal income tax supplies more than half of all federal revenue. The first question you will have to ask yourself is, Am I required to file an income tax return? To answer this question you need to determine your filing status. The income levels at which individuals must file income lax returns for 1987 (even though no tax is owed) are generally as follows: single. ..4,440; married couple, joint head of return. ..7, 560; household. ..4, 440 (the levels are adjusted for taxpayers over 65, blind, or citing sybject. First, A little For the history... of our nations history, Federal Government did not have the specific constitutional power.lo tax individual incomes directly. An income tax was imposed briefly during the civil war. It was used again in the 1840s, but the Supreme Court ruled it Unconstitutional. In 1913, the states ratified the 16th Amendment granting Congress the power to tax personal income. Until the late 1960s taxes werre paised mainly to fight wars. For most of the 1800;s, the Federal Government received on tariffs and excise taxes on liquor and the Great Depression in the began income and Social Security Programs, but these cost comparatively little until the Sieve Day Taxes, one of the most confused topics to all Americans. As a college instructor and certified Public Accountant, I can associate a good share of my reseading hair line to this exBy tobacco for its revenue. married couples filing seperale returns). You should also file if any federal income lax has been withheld from your paycheck. The second question is, which tax return form should use? There are principal forms available for use by the majority of individuals for 1987. These include form 1040 and a shorter return, form 1040A. In addition, certain single taxpayers with no dependents may use form 1040EZ. The form 1040EZ may be used by taxpayers who: (1) Have single filing status; (2) Are not age 65 or older; (3) Are not blind; (4) Claim no dependents (other than yourself); (5) Have taxable income of less than $50,000; (6) Have income only from wages, salaries, tips and taxable interest of not exceeding $400; and (7) Have no divided income or unemployment compensation. If you dont qualify top use the 1040EZ, you may qualify for the 1040A who can be used by: (1) An individual (or married couple) who does not itemize personal deductions; hose gross income consists only (2) of wages, salary, tips, unemployment compensations, dividends, interest; (3) And whose taxable income is less than $50,000. The form 1040A may not be used by an individual who is required to file any of the schedules necessary to support form 1040. If you dont qualify to use form 1040EZor 1040A, you will most likely be required to file form 1040. If you fit into this catagory, I would strongly recommend getting help from a tax expert. Another confusing area, especially I still for students, is the lorm W-find a good share of students that believe that students have some special tax advantages; which is t also for the majority of students. If you will read the statement at the bottom of the form W-- 4 it reads: e If you are a student you may qualify to claim "exempt". Fins statement is referring to those students who are not required to file an income tax return because of then income levels. (As explained earliei in this article). As you can see, we have only scratched the suifacc. but this article was written with the average student in mind who will probably use the form 1040FZ or form 1040A. If you don't fit into this catagory and have any detailed questions, I would be happy to discuss them with you.
