Show Page 2 DIXIE SUN January 29, 1982 School Daze Sun Makes New Beginning College After 40 by Sandy Pulse In the past, the DIXIE SUN has printed many editorials which have been very controversial. These editorials, covering various topics, have several times been the cause for concern of the Dixie College Staff, administration and student body. Because of criticism we have received concerning such things as the Arizona Beer Bust, KRDC Radio Station, college living quarters, and teachers grade-poin- t averages, we at the DIXIE SUN feel that it is time to review our paper, and make a fresh beginning. We hope that in the future we will be able to bring to the students a newspaper which contains the things that they are interested in and will take the time to read. In all newspapers, there will be some controversy, and Im sure this will remain true for the DIXIE SUN. But in our efforts to please the administration, the controversial aspects of the paper will be handled by the staff in a more byjoan Peterson responsible manner. For, we at the DIXIE SUN believe in exploring a controversial situation IF one exists. We are not out to create controversy where there is none. We also believe that the college newspaper should be a forum for student opinions, thoughts, and ideas. Therefore, we are encouraging the student body to get involved in their newspaper by writing letters to the editor. Letters can be written voicing gripes, praises, and views on whatever you feels needs to be said. All letters to the editor should be typed and submitted to either Mr. LaVarr Webb in the Business Building, or left on the editors desk in the newsroom next to the radio station. All letters must be signed. Names, under special conditions, will be withheld upon request. We at the DIXIE SUN reserve the right to edit out any obscenities, or reject letters in poor taste. First, let me say thank you for accepting me; my experience of Dixie College hospitality has been very special. I had many misgivings and fears before I made the decision to come back to school. I was particularly afraid I would feel like a misfit. Not so at all. You see, I am one of a minority group here on campus, the Dixie College Over the Hill Gang"--herfor possibly as many reasons as there of us. A genetic definition of our grour would probably be anyone over forty years old . . . if you happen to be over 20! However, I am very fortunate; one of my sons has been my best friend and grown-u- p companion since we moved away from Utah to California when he was only six. In sharing the highs and lows of his early college adjustment, frequently the notes and clippings I stuck on the refrigerator, taped on the bathroom mirror and wrote everywhere would move to his drafting table, walls, notebooks, texts, etc. s and pearls of My collection of wisdom have helped both of us over some rough spots through the years. Here is one that I often turn to now, whenever the full class load Im carrying buries me : e belly-laugh- We grow old through adversity. We need not seek it out; we can all look back at moments when our lives were in utter chaos, desolation, and despair. Growth comes when we respond to adversity by stretching just an edge beyond our talent and experience. Growth is the result of the stretch. Happiness is the result of the strixnng. ...Robert D. The January 15 letter contains some errors that should be corrected and brought to view. The way in which I collected the data and prepared the article was unprofessional and inadequate, and therefore should not have been printed. It would have been more appropriate to have taken concerns directly to the owners of College Park Apts., rather than state inaccuracies in a newspaper. I wrote the letter without malice. In other words, I didnt write it with the intention or desire to do harm to Richard McLaws and his associates. I was merely trying to voice, what I thought, were some student opinions, but the article as signed by them, didnt accurately represent their views.
