Academic ranks begin with Lecturer followed by Instructor, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor and Professor. In certain cases the position of Professor Emeritus is awarded. These academic titles are internationally recognized and, at most institutions, are associated with salaries. Not so, at Dixie. According to Dr. Pete Nyberg, for Instructional Services, ranks at Dixie are approved based on the ability and willingness of the faculty member to increase his academic credit. t According to the Faculty Promotion Policy at Dixie, its purpose is designed to encourage faculty to prepare more adequately to serve... students. cur-ten- chaired by Dr. Nyberg and consists of five rotating faculty members currently employed by Dixie College. The majority of the Committee must approve all rank advancements. Four years as Assistant Professor is a basic requirement to advance to Associate Professor. Also needed are a Masters degree plus forty five quarters of college credit, or their equivalent. (The Academic Credentials Review Committee determines what credits qualify as being equivais Teaching Certifi- cate is not required to apply for a teaching position at the university or college level. The title of Lecturer is given to those who are employed on a part-timbasis only. To apply for promotion in academic rate, beginning with Instructor, faculty members must meet requirements. Requirements for Instructor include a bachelors degree or vocational certificate andor a basic vocational certificate. To qualify as an Professor, the first and foremost requirement is completing 4 years as an Instructor at Dixie. Possessing a Masters degree or professional vocational certificate are also required for this advancement. The applicant must also submit an evaluation form the Academic Cre- dentials Review Committee. This Committee e lent.) The ranking of Asso- ciate Professor also requires a submission of forms to the Academic Credentials Review Committee. The rank of Professor requires four years as Associate Professor at Dixie and a doctors degree. A Masters degree plus sixty quarter hours of approved college credit or equivalent is also accepted. Appropriate evaluati- - -- academic ons and approval of rank are also required by the Credentials Academic Review Committee. Eligibilty for the Professor Emeritus rank is determined by the Academic Credentials Review Committee and is awarded to all faculty members retiring from Dixie. If, at any time, the Credentials Academic Review Committee rejects rank advancement, the Committee must submit, in writing, reasons for denial. Copies of this document are sent to the applicant, his department dean and the college president. If a faculty member wishes to appeal a denial, he must submit in writing an appeal to the college president, within 10 days of denial. After an appeal is made, an ad hoc Appeals Committee is established consisting of a representative of the Credentials Academic Review Committee and five faculty members who are not currendy on the Academic Credentials Review Committee. This Appeals Committee has the authority to review and reconsider the candidate and issue its own recommendation. If their decision agrees with the denial granted by the Academic Credentials Review Committee, it is final.
