Rebel Awards Assembly most Dixies outstanding scholars and personalities were given enthusiastic recognition Tuesday night during the annual Rebel Awards Dixie College assembly. Over 40 Dixie students were given awards or verbal accolades during the two hour Whos Who event. Max Rose began the presentation part, giving away four plaques to the top students in the natural science division. Dean Wood, Doug Kline, Mary Kaye Kuhlmann, and Shannon Hunt were named the two students in that division, which includes physical and life sciences and nursing. Gina Gubler, this years executive secretary, was chosen as the top home economics student. In the humanities division, dean Alan Laidlaw jve Laurie Jensen the award for top humanities student and Sharon Cannon the social science award. Laura Graf, editor of the literary magazine, gave the awards for the creative writing students. Carol Christensen received the Annie Atkin Tanner award, while Sharon Gayle was given the Pansy L. Hardy creative writing award. The fine arts division gave out the most awards. For art, LaRae Williams, Eric Clay, Ben Hafen, and Susan Hammond were all rewarded for different forms of art. For music, Carlyle Potter was given the Earl Blake award, and Bruce Green took the distinguished service award. The top forensics students were Christa Foster and Shari Green. For radio communications, Pat Ferkany took the top award. Also in the fine arts division is athletics, and Gary Allred was mentioned for his contributions to the football team, and Eric Slaymaker and Craig Hammer were acknowledged for their efforts on the basketball team. Outstanding students from the business and trades division were also spotlighted. For graphic arts. Clark Spendlove was honored, and Dawn Thrun and Corbi Dudley were given awards for their work in the flight attendant giit.. Ed Waldvoegel was awarded the Dixie Ron Metcalf at the Awards Assembly program. Jack Walsh and Ralph Schriock were named outstandstudents, and ing journalism John Alder was named outstanding in the aero tech program. Ron Hammer was an auto body award recipient, and LaRue Spendlove and Sandra Holt were the outstanding freshman and sophomore students in secretarial science. generalized awards for service to Dixie filled the rest of the nights program. The Dixie Spirit Award was given to Ed Waldvogel, of Granada Hills, California, for his enthusiasm and Dixie Spirit. Tanya Ballard, next year's publicity chairperson, was honored as the outstanding freshman female of the year, and Russ More Spirit Award by ASDC President last Tuesday. Feller, this years homecoming committee chairperson, was the outstanding male freshman. The outstanding sophomore male award was given to ASDC President Ron Metcalf, and Christa Foster, this years activities chairperson, was named outstanding sophomore female. Foster was also named a finalist for the Harry S. Truman Scholarship, a national award. One of the nights biggest awards went to ICC Chairperson Clarence (Chuck) Spilker. He was named the years outstanding student. Susette Sullivan and Ralph Schriock were also acknowledged to close the awards presentation. |
