Show Page 2 - THE DIXIE SUN - December 15, 1977 Off The Cuff AA && AA AA Ss AA y AA A A 4ir iff AA AA AA AA AA A A- k By Jim Olsen In Program Bureau, we sing a song with a line that goes, "It's not the things we do at Christmas time, but the Christmas things we do all year through. This line has an important theme. We celebrate probably the most important event in the world. (Important at least to the Christians.) The birth of the Savior of the world. The significant thing of this holiday is the gift of giving that takes place. No other holiday is based on the giving of gifts. Jesus Christ gave to us something we could not obtain on our own: salavation, and eternal life with God. His giving of gifts came in many forms during His life time. Thats the important thing, He gave throughout H is life time, not just on special occasions or holidays. He gave us gifts of knowledge of who we are and where we came from. He taught how man ought to live. He taught of love. It is written in the law that thou shalt love thy neighbor and hate thine enemy, but I say unto you, love your enemies, do good unto them that despise you. He told us to go beyond our responsiblities to our fellow men. During the Roman occupation of Israel, if a Roman soldier asked a Jew to carry his gear, the Jew would do so. By law he was required to carry it one mile. Jesus encouraged them to go the extra mile. To do what you were required and then some. I just wish people would learn the lessons he taught. I mean really learn them. Too often pranks are played on others that seem like fun, but are actually distructful. The soaping of windows, putting moth balls down a gas tank, and many other jokes" are, to me, disgusting. They don't exemplify the second greatest commandment that was taught - Love thy neighbor as thy self. Too often people live, Do unto others before they do unto you. This Christmas as we (you and I) watch the many Christmas specials that try to promote good cheer and love for fellow man, think of the theme they present. After you think of the theme, ponder it in your hearts, and determine to your self that you want to help change much of whats going on. The world would be a much happier place if we put more giving into all twelve months, instead of just one. That was the goal of Jesus Christ. Pick up your cross and follow him. Have a super Christmas. Realize its true meaning and then try to carry it for the rest of your life. Well, tumble I did, and now I can see, Too much Christmas means poor grades for me. Dear Jim, I would like to comment on the article turned in by Mr. Wright, and printed in last weeks issue of The Dixie Sun. In my estimation, that was one of the best articles that has been turned in for a long time. John shows a lot of talent along this line, and I hope he will continue to send in more articles for the IL paper. This story on held my interest right to the last word, and my family enjoyed reading it too. As I read this story, I felt almost as though I was right along with him every minute, all the excitement and laughter and joy - - the happiness in his landing safelyl Im sure many others shared these feelings, too. Lets have many more contributions like this one. Maxine Pace g c L Poli abt CD had Chr |
