For centuries it has been inculcated into the masses of the people and they have been trained to die for it until today the appeal to it is one of the surest and quickest ways of getting a national response. The trouble with it as it now stands is that it is narrowly sectional The American is always for America, wrong or wright, and the same might be said of the Jap, the Frenchmen and all other nationalities. Of course one should show a unpreference for his native land but til we learn to push our visions besee yond our national born dams and good where ever it may be, we will have strife and turmoil. Be patriotic, yes, but in a big way, for not until the world graspes the idea of universal brotherhood there will be no lasting peace. Possibilities which reach beyond her of domain and spread to the miasma the Indian Jungles and the abused peasants of the Russian steppes. huAs Christ was the deliverer of manity so this nation has the potentialities for becoming the deliverer of all nations. Ours is a land which is unsurpassed in wealth, power, and in her heritage of science, art and literature. A heritage which includes not only riches, fame and immense teritory which extends from ocean to ocean but the ideals, hopes, and experience of our forefathers. A heritage which makes possible a greater American only after years of toil. A heritage gained by the sweating of blood and moistened by tears of dreary hearts. The heritage of our pioneer parents who grappled in hand to hand combats to subdue nature and the heritage of Washington, Lincoln, Grant, and Lee, and those brave men who gave the priceless gift of life that we today might live in the atmosphere of freedom and Democracy. All this is our heritage for were we to have untold ages in constant service to humanity we could not repay it. But the span of mans lifetime is brief and while we are the recipients of a greater heritage and increased blessings, we also receive the responsibility of directing and controlling its forces on to a greater America or an America robbed of its possibilities. Ours is the choice of adding strength to a structure or depleting its foundation. America is on the pinnacle of fame , experience, wealth and achievement, and the responsibility of guiding her to heights of fame or degrading her to the dense abyss of failure in ours. Shall we sell the heritage of our fathers for a mess of pottage, or answer the call of America to responsibility and service to mankind. Friends, this is no small task, it will call for big men and big women. Vigorous and active citizenship must characterize our lives. Intelligent direction of action and thought is an absolute essential in the citizen of toIn no previous age has this day. need been so urgent, and in no previous age have obstacles been so numerous and defiant. For yesterday the children of America were broadened, made humble through the inspirations of adversity and the gaining of an international reputation. But today conditions are reverse. Americas standard in the col-loss- al I and life has world is unchallenged application the through shielded been life through of science. We see to rose-hue- d glasses and it appears we whether but be easy and subdued, d view life through the misis equally it glass or the indigo we must view citizens As leading. on life as it is, not as it may appear realize must We the gilded surface. with the passing of physical fundamental hardships and strife of also passes and builder character of glory, comwith the attainment fort and wealth, we also attain that which taxes the normal fibre to the utmost. For the sins of adversity are direct bold challenges to humanity while the evils of prosperity come in tempting, subtle phases, gilded, perfumed masking in deceptive guise poverty sees evil in its aggresfinds sive, hardest phase. Prosperity Cleolike and unspected hidden it patras asp in a boquet of flowers. inProsperity is the Cethsemeny of dividuals and nations. The great test of any nation is not struggle, but attainment; not failure, but success, not adversity, but prosperity. Switzerland, dspite adversity, has survived, while Rome perished surwealth. rounded by magnigicent The crucial period of America was not in a humble, struggling state. The crucial period of America was as with every nation lies in her majectical robes of wealth, power, and achievement. Today America is approaching the garden of Cethsemery, and whether she follows in the decadent footsteps of untold nations or survives a noble and illustrus example for humanity ever to pattern after is controlled by her citizens. The responsibility before us today is a mighty one, but it is not a task for Napoleons, Ceasers, or Alexanders, but a task for character builders, Washingtons, Lincolns manifested in the smaller, humbler way by millions of American citizens. Citizens who do not long for the counterfeit joys of fame, notoriety, g nor immense power, but men and women, who love the simple joys of home, children, neighbors, and country, citizens too simply great to break the finer sodes of the soul. and Citizens who are who say NO when NO is needed. A greater type of citizenship,, citizens who are eager to serve, not as slaves, hoping for a reward but as Gods, who will take no reward except the joy of service. Men could not compensate Shakespere, Darwin, Lincoln, or Washington for their services any more than we could pay the creator for the use of his sunshine. Our lives must be consecrated freely to the gospel of service without considering our own interests we must answer the call of America the call to responsibility. A call not simply for citizens who can bear defeat, poverty, and adversity, but a call for men and women who can bear victory, wealth, without power, and achievement weakening the moral fibre and stamina America needs to preserve her place among nations. Such citizens would mean more to America than the wealth of Solomon or the government or a Utopia, for a government is good, only as its people are good money is useful only as it is directed wisely, politics are corrupted only as rose-colore- God-fearin- level-heade- d, leaders are decadent, and nations survive only as their citizens are honest, intelligent, industrious, and happy. More than ever before, Americas need isfor men and women of strength and character, whose minds are alert and active in the participation of vigorous citizenship. Men and women surrounded by wealth and power who do not lose their morral equilibrium and sense of values. Citizens who do not seek but health, and the quiet contentment fc having served their fellowmen. Citizens who are capable of living up to the responsibility of their heritage Men and women who can guide America through the dark valley of death unto heights of harmony, in. dustry and honesty. As the star lighted the way to Bethleham, so must the individual light Americas pathway to peace, prosperity and happiness. Friends, as citizens, in this great mass of individuality it lies withi our power to make or mar America for truly our nation is strong only as we are strong. Today, you and I can do what untold wealth cannot accomplish, all the power of the world could not remunerate America for her citizens. The individual has been crowned the king of America, and by our stability or weakness we may become the Benedict Arnold or the Savior of our Country. hap-pin- LOCALS A group of students were entertained Feb. 17 at the home of Ida Seegmiller.
