DIXIES CHAMPIONS SAINT GEORGE, UTAH, FEBRUARY 26, 1924. 21-3- TEAMS GO TO TOCKNAMENT Both the College and Highschool Basket hall teams have this year been successful in winning an entry in the State Basket Ball tournaments. The Highschool team has easily taken the Southern division without tasting defeat, while the college team has been beaten but twice. The Junior College tournament will be held in Ephraim, Feb. 2 8 to March 1. Dixie expects its representatives to heat thhe Snow boys on their own floor. The high school team will meet in Salt Lake City. The Dixie students are sure of being well represented. CONTEST "A man who is clean both inside and outside; who neither looks up to the rich nor down to the poo ; who can lose without squealing and win without bragging; who is considerate of women, children and old people; who is too brave to lie; too generous to cheat, and who takes his share of the world and lets other people have theirs. '1 4 .4; ; ;: !. D DAY 14 4 !.! -- :';. The College Day and D Day celebration will be held this season on March 13th and 14th. Special features will be introduced this year that have not been heretofore a part of the D Day celebration. On Thursday March 13th the D will receive its annual coat of white, and the school grounds their usual cleaning up. The D Day lunch on the hill, under the D, will be served with appropriate Thursday toasts, speaches and etc. The interclass track and field meet will be held at the City Park grounds during the afternoon of that day. Thursdays work will, however, in reality, only be a preparation for the greater events of Friday, which has been designated as College Day. On Friday, the days activities will begin at 9 oclock when the line of march will form in front of the College Building. First in the line will be the College Band followed by floats prepared by the various classes and representing the various phases of life in Dixie. An invitation will he extended to the civic, social, and business organizations of St. George to prepare floats and participate in the days activities. From present indications many, and perhaps all, of them will respond. The parade, in its line of March, will cover the principal streets of St. After the parade the stuGeorge. dents, patrons, and friends will assemble at the Stake Tabernacle where rousing program will be given. An invitation will be sent to Supt. Adam S. Bennion, Dr. Frank S. Harris and other prominent educators and citizens of the state to be present. The feature of the evening will be D Dance and the the annual crowning of the D Queen. ! ! 4 I:!' ; V POLLAANNA" PRESENED the school play, was Pollyanna, presented at the Opera House Feb. 14 and 16 under the direction of Miss Ruby Bryner. Pollyanna is an exceptionally amusing play and the cast utilized every opportunity to make it Ferol McQuar-rihighly entertaining. as Pollyanna, interperated her role with an ease and adroitness which was a credit to the director and the school she represented. The entire cast and their director, Miss Bryner, are to be commended on the excellent rendition of the many amusing incidents and pathos of "Pollyanna. The play was repeated in Enterprise, Cedar City and Parowan. Dixie appreciates the splendid support and courteous treatment extended to the cast in these various places. e, very able contestants entered in the competition. The orations exibited an originality in style and development; the subjects being well selected and pertinent to present condition. The Judges, President Snow, John T. Woodbury, Jr., and Mrs. Grace Woodbury, rendered the decision in favor of Letha Taylor. One judge, however could not decide on her or Wayne Gardner. Edward Hunt represented the High School Department. The subwas deject, True Americanism veloped in a commendable manner. TITLE FOR CONTEST During the month of February the shadow of death darkened the homes of two of our well known students. On Feb. 14, Mrs. Chas. E. Jones of Enoch, Utah, mother of Raymond Jones of the 4th year class, answered the final class. On Feb. 19. Mrs. Eva E. Bradshaw, mother of Sherwin Bradshaw of the 3rd year class, was also summoned to answer the call of death. Both deaths were sudden and unexpected. The Dixie News, as the representative of the Dixie College Students, extends a heart felt sympathy in the hour of sorrow. CLASS TAKE TRIP Tuesday, Feb. 12. The Geology class of the Dixie College spent the day in Dameron Valley. This trip afforded the students an excellent opportunity for studying the geological specimens of this section. During the spring quarter, it is expected that several like trips will be taken. SELECTED Arrangements for the Year Book essay contest have been completed and subjects for the various classes have been selected. For the sophomores: The Value of a College for the freshmen: Education, The Value of Vision; for the fourth years: Why go to College; and for the third years: Using an Education. Pages in the year book will be set apart for the four prize winning essays and Year Books will be given to the successful contestants. All compositions must be submitted before Wednesday night. By defeating the Kane County schools last week and scalping the B. A. C. in the games of Feb. 21 and 22, the team has a clean record of victories for this year. The game at Kanab, Feb. 15, end1 ed in a victory for the local team. The first quarter the Kanab boys took the Dixie team by surprize and piled up a big lead against them. This lead was short lived, however, ior Dixie came back with some real playing in the second half and captured the score. The game in Orderville the following night was almost a duplicate of the one played at Kanab.- - The final score was 21-- 3 6 in favor of Dixie. The B. A. C. was unable to stand against the steady opposition of the Dixie team in the game played at Cedar, Thursday 21. They suffered a sweeping defeat. The B. A. C. team was again led to the slaughter in their game with Dixie at the College gym, Friday, Feb. 22. The Cedar boys did their best but it was not good enough to offset the steady playing of the Dixie high school team. GIRLS DAY 3 FIFTY-NIN- E ! ! Forty-thre- e have made application for graduation from Of the high school department. these 11 are from St. George; 10 from Santa Clara; 2 from Enterprise; 6 from Hurricane; 8 from Kane County; 1 from Enoch; 1 from Gunlock; 2 from Washington; 1 from New Harmony; and 1 from Pine Val- ley. There are 16 applicants for graduation from the two years college course either as Normal or as Junior college graduates.
