Show 9 THE DIXIE OWL Society Notes Thomas Brooks Fletcher gave a very int eresting lecture on in The Martyrdom of Fools the Tabernacle, dan. 16. It was the fourth number of the ;yceum Course. The Domestic Science room was the scene of a jolly party given The by the faculty Jan. 19. ladies drew for the candy receipes and the men drew for the ladies whom they were to help or hinder. We cannot vouch for the quality of the candy for we did not sample it. Ambrose Cannon, an old Dixie student now at Fort Douglas gave an interesting talk in chapel while he was home on a furlough. We are always glad to welcome our old students, especially the soldier hoys. Our school is not wanting in originality and talent. 'This was shown in the vaudeville which was presented by the Seniors in the Opera House. It was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. Did you find out Why Smith left home? If you didn't see the College play you certainly missed a treat and a good laugh. The play went of No, Yaw. without a hitch and the interest was kept up from beginning to end. The players are to be complimented on their excellent Mr. 1 work. We were greatly shocked to learn of the sudden death of Florence Peeve of Hurricane, a former student of the Dixie Normal College. The College extends its sympathy to the bereaved relatives and friends. Some of the members of the faculty and Student body will attend the funeral which will take place Feb. 12. Athletics The first league basket Ball game was played in the Gym, 18, between theD. N. C. and the Murdock Academy teams. The game was a fast one from start to finish, and the boys of both teams showed that they were well prepared and ready to fight for the honors. However, the Murdock boys found themselves no match for Dixie and when the game was ended the score stood in our favor. The following week our boys n went north to play at Cedar, and Beaver. The first game was played at Cedar City, January 26. '1'his was one of the fastest Basket Ball games ever p'ayed in this part of the country. A number of students accompanied the team, aud all went with the determination to win if it were possible. At the end of the first half the score was 0 in favor of Dixie. At this point the B. A. C. Students became very excited and the game raged on, now a basket for Dixie, then one for the B. A. C., until the close of the second half the score stood A five minute heat was in which the Dixie boys played got-onbasket and the B. A. C. got two fouls. '1'his ended in a A third heat, tie brought in favor of the the score 37-4- 0 January Par-owa- 14-2- 63-2- 3. 35-3- 5. B. A. C. Stur.enegger was unable to play at Parowan the following night on account, of a sprained ankle which he sustained at Cedar. We didnt need him as the Parowan boys were easy. Most; of their efforts seemed to go toward knocking our men out, rather than to make baskets, and the game ended with a score of 7 in our favor. 'things looked pretty dark for the boys; but they were 18-3- er determined not to give up, and at the end of the game the score stood 9 in favor of Dixie. Our last league game with Cedar was played Friday, Feb. 1st. The Dixie boys had not yet recovered from their trip north, and were in very bad condition. Everybody looked to this game as the deciding point of the league. The B. A. C. team with a large crowd of rooters arrived early in the day. and seemed to be aware that winning this game meant winning the league championship. The game started at 7:30 and the boys were greeted with songs and yells from the crowded sidelines as they came on the floor. The teams were very evenly matched, and every one stopped breathing as the ball went up in The game started the center. with a rush and continued so until the end of the first half, the score being The Cedar boys came back In strong in the second half. spite of the determined efforts of the Dixie boys they took the lead, and the score at the end of the second half was 4 in favor of the B. A. C. Both teams need to be congratulated on (heir clover work. We wish the Cedar team well, and assure them of even a harder fight next year. The last league game to he played at St. George, was played Friday, Feb. 8, between Parowan High School and D. N. C. teams. The game was an easy mark for the Dixie boys. Two men on both teams were knocked out, and the game was rough from the start to finish. The end of the second half found the score 4 in our favor. 38-4- 20-2- 0. 30-4- 54-1- I dont believe our Ball Team could play half as well if Frank Crosby were not such an excellent Cheer Master, do you? |
