the invasuper-secre- Psychological sparks but not enough shocks in this "Body Snatchers" variation By Sean P Means THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE "The Puppet Masters" borrows its creepy tone conspiratorial whispers and advertising ("Trust No One") from television's vogue du :lour "The XFiles" Too bad this stylish but predictable film didn't borrow some of the TV show's thrills The story is basically reheated "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" (although its source material a 1951 novel by Robert A Heinlein tag-lin- e nt sion "Slug like" also describes Stuart Orme's directing style The film delivers few genuine shocks telegraphing the action well in advance On the plus side the film's visuals especially the creatures by Greg Cannom ("The Mask" "Bram Stoker's Dracula") are detailed and creepy cleverly material like an old pro Thal ("A Stranger Among Us") is kind of stiff but Warner ("Mr Saturday Night") shows spunk Richard Belzer Will Patton and Keith David add some nice moments in supporting roles Though "The Puppet Masters" (rated R for violence science-fictiogore and brief language) is merely average SF horror it would be great if the film is successful enough to spark interest in Heinlein's other novels Heinlein's futuristic visions (Stranger in a Strange Land Starship s ahead Troopers) were of other writers — and it's only now that movie technology is equal to capturing them evoking "Body Snatchers" "Alien" "Invaders From Mars" and other predecessors of the genre The script (credited to three writers) maintains one of the best parts of Heinlein's novel: letting us know what it feels like to have your mind taken over by a parasitic alien Those psychological chills nearly compensate for the lack of dramatic surprises Sutherland a veteran of conspiracy
