Here's how to hang food bags By Bert Lind ler SPECi TO THE TRIBUNE Dry weather and lack of food conhave led to more frontations than normal in the western United States this year With thousands of hunters heading to the forests this fall those contacts could increase Help bears stay wild and alive by keeping human food out of their reach You will be doing yourself a favor — bears aren't welcome visitors in most camps — and you will help bears stay out of trouble Bears must eat like champs so they will have enough fat for winter hibernation Berries pine nuts and bulbs will do but they are not as rich in calories as a typical backpack garbage pail or horse feed sack When a bear becomes a problem by eating too much food it will likely be killed In Utah this year bears have been killed in Nine Mile Canyon and in the Uintas after causing trouble for campers and rural residents In one case a black bear sank its teeth into a sleeping bag with a camper inside at the Lower Provo River Campground near Mirror Lake in the Uintas The bite didn't break the camper's skin After the bear was tracked and killed its stomach was found to be full of chicken tuna plastic bags and twist ties from another camp The victim had stored his food in his vehicle but other campers had not If you are near your car store the food in the trunk But that won't do for backpackers and riders on overnight horse trips They need to keep food out of a bear's bear-huma- n pie-eatin- - g can slide to the lowest point on the cord This should be about halfway between the two trees if the branches are at the same height One end of the cord can be wrapped around a low branch and tied You may want to put on gloves before hoisting the food bags Friction makes the task harder than it looks A friend can help by lifting the You missed? Try again Missed tosses can be frustrating The trailing cord slows the rock Sometimes the rock gets caught in another branch and you have trouble pulling it free Once one end of the cord is over a branch you use the same procedure to get the other end over a second branch The cord must be long enough that the middle is still lying on the ground between the two trees Put all your food in large stuff stacks (the ones for sleeping bags or sleeping pads) You can tie bags to the cord with a slip knot Be careful when hoisting bags so they don't end up closer to one tree than the other A plastic clip like those designed to keep keys in place in fanny packs can also be used These clips are available locally in backpacking supply stores Put the clip over the cord and clip in the food bags Now they Clay 77701a- tthGaraz FMESTAIE TIRE (3337)4 571-DEE- R 1 800-298-50- JERKY 12835 S p 39 SAUSAGE MINUTEMAN DR AMMOMEPOR mosmo- : 44 I ' - - Ia - mai4 ti1 4 f–— 14 (A'l Pm - Stk El 4x4 8838 MEGA WINCH Model HW1200 '' SNOW-WA- Yi 9) GMC FOR SALES & SERVICE 14 A -- kI 'AL DOMES TI C I RADIAL to 1149 35000 n an t emer I ID Ak IL MILE P2158044 P21565118 Kim tos othei 35000 MUTED WARRANTY GMC Truck and Jimmy are registered trademarks of General Motors Corp 566-380- 0 TERRAIN LT'" : $51" Al Season 2 Ste ei Bess AL Nos Leila WWW W FIRENAWK R4S $73L99 Pp21238177751 WARRANTY 310050M5 7599 32A1505 meg LT2250906 1123585R16 8449 8599 ipm 9391 116 0861101Ita t 4 AL I a 1709 Ms 8530 lj 110111110 '118" RADIAL $40APTICalI Steel Ztint AaI Season Wookorail " MAI r573013 la tor other Woo CAS Oa WOMIIEDIUNA0MNANILETT lef sieer Oft CI- AND FILTER NO VIIINESTt NO ANNUAL Install new titter Lubricate chassis 01 winkWe) Refill up to 5 (Net Kendar FEE I ' SOO WEST image WEST 2100 COINFTESY r coat SUGARHOUSE S 700 EAST 2101 sc THAI i ED WARRANTY KEARNS MO W S400 SOUTH 966-114- 0 I 868-326- 0 DR 1 ken SANDY IL 100 ell g pilaaul I I otcome woull" its one 1 EAST maw Univereity ISO IV 1 224-89- MURRAY 11102 C 1)14M EL mASTERCARE CAR 262-286- 8 1C:t13 LIIPTZJI IAIR 1:11)1 PIM litIOAVS PURCHASE HAIA314m 606-008- 1 $IO system install flush and clean Remove old contarmants WIN mooned arnouM ol instail COMM 0 11240 486-727- 9 IIIDGES nmterms t :' entrain I WWI SERVICE Ire 4)1e rsum IF firestone We 6 Saws you do oo ocoo guaranteed Fedora your An sedittenal productsasencos us tor copy of wentten enact warmness oo York Erick prodoct rearm and tread doom may vary Owns warmaal Morn Sse affiliated dealers listed tor ewe compsetra otters APR 4100 4191 IcHEcK1 $5 it -1r ma Mall 999t WEST JORDAN Redwood Rd SOWN 9030 ym 5 ntlitt3 co on It till5 55'MX MILE 0 1BRAKE Oil 10W-3- ttt coslUdIgtatitildiel E51 17 0411 Col I8510M3 -1-ANU FOR 90 DAYS' S 165RI3 Sites ioiMPIPPRANILEre lease Weil only INU Rated irr: tom l' 8402 Liu oil aurae Cali rx) Cl klAstio im61 IMPORT CC flue 0 Mow 74S9 30z950R15 383-67- Fr?
