J Everett Lane who lived next door we found to be bea a couple married a year and by the same minister that solemnized our wedding Of Ot course this speedily led to Intimacy and we were delighted with them especially so when J J. J Everett declared that the tho one thing he Insisted upon was a quiet neighborhood neighbor neighbor- hood Curiously enough our neighbors on the other side Mr and Mrs Mr Moses 1 Conant were also newly weds The bride Sarah soon discovered to be a graduate of her own college which made them ex chums but it was not until Conant told me that he was was a foreman In a steel mill who demanded demanded de do- absolute quiet after his days day's work In the factory that I offered him hima a cigar and all the drinks he dared to take Ned said Sarah soon after these calls had been returned and one or two favors exchanged with our flank neighbors Ive Just thought of ot a dandy plan and I simply wont won't have you laugh at me when I tell It It ItI I pledged my word with many kisses and what go with them You know how surprised and delighted delighted de do lighted we were to find that the Lanes and the held the same views regarding quiet that that we do Well lets let's form a little club among ourselves our our- selves Call It the Tranquille club or something like that Good Idea Love but lut we mustn't allow bridge playing else the club will turn into anything but a tranquille one one The Lanes thought the idea a splendid splendid did one the Con ants ditto so the little little lit lit- tle the club was soon formed with with Mrs Lane president Sarah vice president Moses Conant secretary J J. Everett I Lane treasurer Mrs Conant and myself myself myself my my- self reception committee The committee committee commit commit- tee was an afterthought Mrs Lane I proposing It in order not to slight any of ot us So we were all officers The first two meetings of ot the Tranquille Tran Tran- quille club were great successes Essays Essays Es Es- says were written and read on the joys of ot a quiet neighborhood how to gain flesh by keeping still etc etc At the third meeting Mrs Conant was not present Moses excusing her absence by saying that she was ill III but saying no more than that The night before beCore the next meeting of ot the Tranquille Tran Tran- quille club lub my wife and I were awakened awak ened by cries emanating from the Canant Conant Co Ca- nant house It was was wasa a shrill cry and we guessed the reason when we saw the d doctor leaving the house a a. a little later At the fourth meeting of ot the Tranquille club the resignations of Mr and Mrs Moses Conant were received received re re- and accepted The baby was a dear we all agreed but It was awfully noisy constantly constantly con con- yelling at the top of ot It Its lungs But Dut wh when n Sarah gracefully inferred interred that It made more racket than was absolutely necessary Mrs Conant was indignant and would have nothing to toI I say to us for some Bome time Nevertheless the Tranquille club still prospered We held three more meetings with all members present At the tho following gathering Mrs Lane stated that she and her husband had decided to take a trip to her mothers mother's home up In the country and thought It best for them to resign Of course when she insisted e wo had to accept Ned wed I simply will not give up this club I started it and we must keep It up UI even If It we ve two are the only members mem mem- bers And that settled It The club lasted just about three months longer That meant that Sarah and I held three meetings which were edifying If It not exciting It was rather an effort on the part of ot both of ot us Interest in the organization or or- lagged especially on the part of Sarah Then the doctor called at our house Two days later Sarah offered her resignation resignation res res- ignation from Crom the Tranquille club which I J as the surviving member ac Then I offered and acc accepted my own But the funny part of ot It was vas that we wo received an interesting note from Mr and Mrs Conant up in the country to the effect that their family had also been Increased by one The returned a little later lafer and that was the tho last of ot a n quiet neighborhood But all of ot us were satisfied l fl |
