Carrie Miller, above, designer manicurist, gems specialist, can turn ordinary finger tips into degems, initials. lightful works of art, featuring multi-colors, TrOM SMI PMM kv Dw DSJO PEHRSON By Carolyn Monson Tribune Fashion Editor Santa forget to leave the diamonds requested on your wish list There's still time to nail a couple down at the manicurists for New Years For those lucky enough to benefit from Santa's generosity with diamonds, there are other gem choices as close as the finger tips Carrie Miller, designermamcurist and gems specialist at McCarty Salon, Salt Lake City, has been doing the nails of holiday revelers in the seasons favorite color, Christmas red Its what she adds to the red nails that makes them festive enough to rival the Festival of Trees Prior to Christmas, she did poinsettias, Christmas trees, Frosty, multiples of Rudolph and enough taping and combining of colors to rival the most spectacular presents Now, its balloons, champagne glasses, more taping and coloring plus jewels Ms Miller does some frankly fake ornamention such as rhinestones, implanted in wet, clear polish The real jewels, rubies, emeralds, diamonds, opals, 14 karat gold initials and nail charms, become more permanently fixed Ms Miller uses a hand drill to fix the jewels in the free section of real nails The gems are then secured by bolts on the backs of nail tips What does it cost in time and money for the nails that should never rip, wear, tear, snare or, worse, break7 Figure to spend about an hour and a half for up to five colors separated by gold, metallic tape and $10 extra for the design and paint Applying five different colors of polish, plus taping, takes Ms Miller a half hour The charms and gems cost an additional $25 to $200 Solid gold nails with clusters of diamonds can cost up to $400 Ms Miller does not secure a supply of gems in a safe or even a strong box attached to her manicure table The gems are ordered Only the truly daring would wear 10 different nail designs Most, according to Ms Miller, opt for one or two with either the pinky, ring or index fingers as the designated super nail For those who wish nothing more than a manicure French maniwith polish, red or the natural-lookincure featuring a pale look, the cost is $10 g DtstBfv Steve Baker MHter Sie.eel.ee CLOSEOUT SALE!
