Show Jixu .lll.. 2A TV Sait Lake Tribune, Friday, October 18, 1985 o A-- ty gled out, although speculation abounded about his secretive financial dealings and the possibility that Mr. Hofmann feared being exposed as a forger of valuable Mormon documents. That rampant speculation on the part of both police officials and the media has led to a crackdown on information being released to the press. But all officials agree that the ' both the susplayers in the crimes , pect and the intended victims have two things in common- a link to the collection and sale of Mormon mem- orabilia and financial transactions related to those dealings. We're looking at the papers, the finances, or both, as the motive right now, said Sheriff Hayward. The ; notice is within these circles, but what exactly it is we dont know. Among items recovered from Mr. Hofmann's car and now in police evidence are a series of documents purported to be the William McLellm journals, dealing with the earliest periods of the origins of the LDS Church Supposedly included in those journals are ancient hieroglyphiclike symbols from which The Pearl of Great Price" one of the churchs sacred scriptures was translated. Police said those documents were badly water and fire damaged in the explosion. The authenticity of those journals if indeed they are in the documents recovered from Mr. Hofmanns car has not been determined. In fact, Sheriff Hayward and other police officials speculate that Mr. Hofmann may have been involved in a historical document forging scam in which he sold hundreds of thousands of dollars in forged papers to collectors and high LDS Church offi-c'ls. .Jr. Hofmann is a historical docu- ment dealeiywho, in 1983, sold the controversial white salamander letter to Mr. Christensen, who in turn donated it to the LDS Church. Several notable historians verified the authenticity of that letter. Police didnt know Thursday what exactly the connection is between Mr. Hofmann, these historical docu- ments, and the intended vict;ms or whether the possibility exists that the documents were forged. . . And quite frankly, right now, we dont care, said Sheriff Hayward. We can speculate all we want, but right now were trying to gather evidence to charge Mr. Hofmann with ... murder. There is no definite motive right now. Theres a lot of speculation that the McLellin journals are forgeries . . , But we have nothing solid at this point, he said. Mr. Hofmanns possession of the letter, the purported McClellin journals and numerous other documents which be has sold to other collectors including high LDS Church officials does raise some interesting questions, the sheriff said the first being, Why him? Where does he get them? All of the sudden there's this one guy who keeps coming up with these things, worth all that money. These kind cl documents, dont just lie around for years and years, Sheriff hay vard said. I know for a fac that 50 of us couldnt find these papers in 50 years if we were looking for them, the sheriff said But he keeps coming up with them. Detectives, however, began to earn more about the man who has become their prime suspect in the killings. They know now that he had extensive dealings with Mr. Christensen, and at one point the two of them had a joint bank account containing money they may have intended to use to buy historical papers. They also know that Mr. Hofmann's car contained materials with which he could have constructed the simple but deadly pipe bombs used in the murders. And they know that, based on evidence retrieved from his car, he was planning to leave Salt lake City in the near future. An airplane ticket to an undisclosed location in New York state was found among the checks and other belongings scattered by the explosion. Also Thursday, detectives continued to seen and execute various search warrants in hopes of gathering more evidence. Police returned to his house with another search war- rant after retrieving some evidence Wednesday night. Among that mate- e rial, which included blank paper, personal documents and clothing, were items which Sheriff Hayward said that there is speculation that these things could be used in forging documents. Police were seeking a second residence Mr. Hofmann may have been renting and also executed search boxes. warrants on Detectives questioned Mr. Hofmann briefly at the hospital following Wednedays explosion, and were told a story which was inconsistent with his injuries and with what witnesses parch-mentlik- larg- in citys 42-d- ... told us." The Sheriffs Office Thursday was served with a notice from Salt Lake City defense attorney Ronald Yen-gic- h that he had been retained in the case and that no further questioning of Mr. Hofmann would be possible. Gregory Nokes Associated Press Writer WASHINGTON After basking in the triumph of the capture of the hijackers of the Achille Lauro, the Reagan administration now must deal with the unfavorable consequences, underscored by the fall of an Italian government long supportive of American interests. Particularly disturbing to some is that a terrorist incident could have led to the resignation of the government of Premier Bettmo Craxi of Italy, an important NATO ally. We all have been trying to show terrorists cant achieve anything by what they do, said Helmut Sonnen-feld- t, a former senior Nixon administration official who is now a guest scholar at the Brookings Institution here. The terrorists didn't intend to overthrow the Italian government, but it is unfortunate that a terrorist incident can have an enect of this magnitude. Sonnenfeldt said the Craxi government has been on the whole a very good and effective government from an American standpoint and a NATO standpoint. To lose this government is a setback.
