J L L. Pelham of the horticultural de department department department of ot the Fort Hays branch ex experiment experiment station at Hays City Kan Prof Pelham Is a graduate of the Kansas Agricultural college who has since leaving the mother institution been employed largely in experimental The Drag Complete work in horticulture at the Fort Hays experiment station During his pe period nod of service there as we well as during his service at the Agricultural college coneg at Manhattan where he spent a por per tion of ot his time he did a great deal of experimenting on the construction and maintenance of earth roads A As the result of this work he has evolved e the form of drag shown herewith It will be seen that the new form of drag differs from the old in no particular ular except that the rear scraping I board is set at an angle of 45 degrees y Cross Section of Drag instead of or 90 He Ile found that the front board was sufficient to do all of the cutting necessary and that the rear board when set at an angle served to smooth and finish the road much more satisfactorily than did the old form This new form of ot drag may ha have hae e its standing board faced with Iron for tor a n apart apart part of ot the length to serve as ris a cutting cut ting tang edge and also to facilitate the dropping of the accumulated earth Into the tho rough places where It would be smoothed over b by the slanting board This new form of drag is found to require very much less of team work worl to handle it and to give very much better service in every way Both forms of drag are still In use at the college and experiment station but the old or King drag is in use only occasionally when it Is desired to cover a large surface In a a. short time and two drags are necessary |
