Show WAS TAKEN OUT OF A WASTE BASKET like any other idea worth while chautauqua tegan began with a man the man back of this idea wa was a john 1 H 1 vincent lie he was born down south boutil ot of northern stock was a teacher of country schools and became a minister at 18 19 years ol of age ile he did not have a college education but had what was worth more an idea it was the education which ends only with death no school teacher could by any possible manner be satisfied with the oi 0 d fashioned sunday school and its teachings so in 1874 on the borders ot of chautauqua lake new york was held the first assembly the object ot of this gathering was to conduct classes ot of sunday school teachers to train them to be better teachers mr vincent had the idea ot of a normal school and it if he had not listened to counsel these gatherings would have been held in some building lewis miler the inventor of the buckeye reaper was the one to add the out door feature ideas have a ot of growing it given a chance this one grew from a sunday school institute there came a course ot of reading that has given to thousands all over the world the college outlook on ufe afe A great assembly plant has grown up at chautauqua lake halls hails hotels cottages and co colleges leges and each summer the leading men ot of many nations act as teachers and entertainers to 10 large companies of people who live there tor for the summer months many other assemblies have grown up all over the country more than 1000 were held last summer there are two plans under which these assemblies are conducted one as in ia ogden A local organization is formed and the talent is selected with a view to local conditions and needs the other is run on the circus or circuit plan under the latter the program for a large number ot of assemblies is identical and with three or tour four tents jents in use they travel from place to place the chautauqua la in ogden was picked up out of a waste basket A commercial body here received a communication ni from one of 0 the bureaus selling talent and it was consigned to the office waste basket from which it was rescued by on emore interested after several attempts an organization was formed and in 1911 the first assembly was held in glenwood park during the season a stock company was organized with over members who each paid 10 the chautauqua Is a common meeting pace for all creeds and parties and the feeling of unity which characterizes acte ogden today Is due in part to the assembly t n re fal re IX tn T ZT 14 5 1 I J i IM AA 11 41 N V V tit na I 1 irl S A r 7 4 for full information as to tickets confer with prof H E thompson who has charge ot of the ticket selling la in this city tickets are on sale lor for the time beang at the 0 R T office |
