The networks did finally agree to air the announcement, but only after the reference to contraceptives was changed to, There are many ways to prevent unintended pregnancies. Network representatives said they have taken the strong stand because they feel a sizable portion of the public does not want birth control information advertised on television, but health officials said this view is not accurate. Characters participate in frequent liaisons, in sometimes seemingly random combinations, leaving precious few aspects of human sexuality unexplored. Nobody ever talks about birth control. Contraception remains taboo among the networks, consigned by standards and practices to the news and public service divisions, rarely discussed in entertainment programming and never in commercials. "We refer to it as the said David Andrews, executive vice president of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America. "Its the one word they wont allow to be uttered. The networks agree. When a national group of pediatricians last week called on television and radio to allow advertising of condoms and other contraceptives, network representatives were direct: They said no. "We just dont feel its appropriate for us to advertise that product," said Jeff Tolvin, director of business inforWe have our mation for ABC-TV- . own standards here." The standards are uniform across the networks and apparently inviolable. Last year, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists developed a public service announcement to publicize a number s could call for birth control information. The ad contained the word "contraceptive" and was rejected. It was a fairly restrained spot, said Morton Lebow, a group spokesman. It left the message that unintended pregnancies have greater risk than any of todays contraceptives. tongue-in-chee- This is not the controversial issue that the networks think it is, Andrews said. I have seen contraceptive ads on cable televison and they are perfectly tasteful. Its hard to see how anyone would object. The public also wants the information aired, Andrews said. He cited a 1985 Harris poll in which 78 percent of those surveyed said television should present messages about birth control. However, George Schweitzer, vice president of communication for the CBS Broadcast Group, said the networks have to consider the other 22 percent. We find ourselves as a network broadcaster coming into almost every home, and we look at ourselves as a guest in those homes, Schwietzer said. We strive to entertain and inform and not to offend. k toll-fre- Andrews countered: If they were truly concerned about upholding the moral standards of the country, they would have to clear their schedules. The television medium, which uses blatantly sexual messages, not only in selling products, but to form the plot of many of its prime-tim- e programs, has some responsibility to at least mention there is such a thing as contraception," he said. e teen-ager- Monday September 6 5:15 a.m. Down To Earth 5:25 a.m. (D 12:30 p.m. (D 5:30 a.m. 1:00 p.m. Santa Barbara General Hospital ran tii NBC News lit I; Morning Stretch HD Guiding Light Mister Rogers CBS News 84 Bewitched CD 5:55 a.m. Down To Earth 6:00 a.m. (LO Today's Special 54 CD News (Ji cji ABC News CBS Morning News (D Sesame Street Hooked On Aerobics Jimmy Swaggart (1) Andy Griffith 2:00 p.m. Another World Divorce Court Love Boat Do It Yourself iji (D (LD 84 6:30 a.m. Boomerang Challenge Of The GoBots (ID 54 O 84 34 (D ID Newlywed Game House For All SHOW Ask Washington 7:30 a.m. CD Sesame Street Timmy And Lassie G Joe Meet the woman who's Phil Donohue 8.00 a.m. i' CLD 84 ,24 8:30 a.m. i Card Sharks Figuring It Out Flintstones Great Space Coaster J) 54 24 9:00 a.m. Family Ties 5 Donahue Price Is Right Educational Programming Mister Rogers Tom And jerry j 'S' 7 j n 54 24 J 5j 34 n Gourmet Cooking He Man And Mas ters Of The Universe 24 - Inspector Gadget Newhart Baseball. I've had seven national figures come here to promote my campaign and Ive told them to avoid talking talk about the opposing candidate.
