Johnson has not had a ty pioal sumbut then the junior is not a mer typical high school student. This summer she has visited more dream places than most about. Johnson has traveled across the United States, competing in national tennis tournaments in states from New York to California, as well as Canada. "Competing is fun and I get to see the world. the brunette said of her typical summer. "I have met a lot of interesting people. If I wasn't in tennis, I would be in another sport, but I wouldn't be out and around like 1 am now." on top. grabbing the girls 16 singles title. After that it was time to head back to New York for a few weeks of training before traveling to Canada lor the After winning the girls' No. 1 state singles title and leading Highland to a second-plac- e finish, she headed to New York. There she competed in the national indoors tournament, placing among the top seven juniors. Then, over the Christmas holidays, she was off to Arizona for the Fiesta Dowl, where she was once again among the top seven. January was the sectional tournaments for the Intermountain area, held in Las Vegas and Colorado. The Intermountain Finals came in June, and Johnson came out of those World Youth Cup From Canada she went to California for the National Hardcourts. In the singles competition she placed among the top 2U. Teamed with Salt Laker Ruth Ann Stevens, she took fifth in the doubles. Then, off to Oklahoma she went for the Team Interearn sectionals. The Intermountain took third. visit at home After a three-daJohnson, was off once again. This time it was to Houston for U.S Olympic Festival where she won a bronze medal. West Virginia was next on the agenda for the nationals, where she was once again among the top 20. And now it's time to prepare for the high school season beginning in just a few weeks. When Johnson is not traveling around the states, she is visiting her family in Salt Lake and, of course, working out. "Years ago I just had a back-cougame, now I want to have more of an game. My mental game is the part I need the most work in," Johnson said. Just how did all this begin" "I started when I was 8. We moved down from the canyon and lived next to the Cottonwood Club," remembers Johnson. "My mom was playing in leagues, and so we started. I can remember her tossing my brother and I balls. I always wanted to go out and play. I'm obsessed. "I remember when I beat the girl who was first at our club. She was 1 beat her and beating me 1 thought it was such a big deal. I just enjoy it so much. If I even take four days off I get antsy. During May she was out with a shoulder injury, but she recovered in no time at all. I would go out on the court with a I was so friend and hit bored," she remembered. The traveling and winning are all exciting, but Johnson has had to give up a lot, she says. They ask if it's fun. I love it. but I've missed out on a lot. I have no time to do extra things and sometimes my friends don't understand," she said. Skiing is one sport Johnson has missed out on. With her father founding Snowbird Ski Resort, she could ski before she could walk. "People say these high school years are the most important socially in your life. I really do enjoy tennis, it has given a lot of opportunities to travel and meet many people," Johnson said. Plans for the future include tennis, as well as school. "I'm definitely going through college. and there is the possibility of trying the pro circuit. But that is still six years away. If tennis doesn't do it. I'll be able to fall back on a career. Johnson said.
