Paucartambo By Terry Orme Tribune hiaff Writer I like to look dt rivers trie dtne way a rriountdineer looks dt mountains says a kayaker m Hautar lambo-Ine- a River the fir-- t feature flint by hxdl filmmaker John Armstrong "When you climb mountains you start at the bottom and go to the top With rivers I like to start at the top and go to the bottom That $ what Armstrong and a team of American kayakers attempted to do in 1985 when they traveled to Peru and the Paucartambo River The river drops 14 ihmj feet m 250 miles as it plunges down from the peaks of the Peruv un ndes to the Amazon Basin Starting near the Paucartambo s I'Lh l A wild ride in the Andes headwaters well above 14 IKK) feet the team of very experienced kayakers put in at a huge lake surrounded bv peaks While the Paueartambo is a narrow relatively shallow river at the beginning of the journey, it soon is fed bv many tributaries to become a rag ing torrent Spring rains added to the volume and turbulence of the water Armstrong's film is much more than a sports film While it does include some spectacular moments as the kayakers manuever their crafts among boulders, rapids and between steep rock walls.
