Chen seems to say, are keeping the country from entering the 20m century. "Under the Bridge tells us something about modern Chinese culture, The film s main accomplishment, however, is in keeping these political points of view in their proper perspective. This is a film about people, not propaganda. The story is about Qin Nan (Gong Xue), a lovely young woman who sets up her sewing stall on a street in Shanghai. She uses her talents as a seamstress to support herself and her aging father. Gao Zhihua (Zhang Tie-ltis the young bicycle repairman who lives on the same street. When Qin runs into some difficulty with local officials, Gao comes to the rescue, inviting her to set up shop with him. This isn't to say that Under the Bridge, written and directed by Bai Chen, is without ideas or substance. Quite the contrary. The characters in this drama have had their lives irrevocably changed by the Cultural Kevo-lutio- n of the '60s. Some of them do tattle with old and backward ideas n) maker, Gao finds himself attracted to Qin. At th same time he's perplexed by the sadness which hangs over her like a cloud.
