i 7 resetv 7 k TAt lob - 0 4 1 NZfiarlft' fi '1 in 4 7 di A ta' i - Seanember7 20MI 1900 in Oslo Norway to Alfred ' ' '' s I' -- - - ii?'''' 4rr—t -- 1"'No' -- r-- r-- and spouses LamarOar- k - ':dc and Luana Bailey 4 1 d lone and Jack Monson: Tom and LeJoyce BalHanCarol John and ley Ham and Reba Bailey sen all of Solt Lake City Keith and Clarice Bailey Whither Cant Betty and Jock Haight Pasco Wash Ron and Kay Bailey Boise Idaho many grand great and Preceded in death by on infant son Funeral services will be held Wednesday September 1 lth 11:00 am at the West Jordan s Museum Chronicles Polygamous Life of Utah Pioneer and His 11 Wives lune By David Clifton THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE WEST JORDAN — Nancy Long owes much of her business success umm 1 to Mormon pioneer and polygamist Archibald Gardner She bought a dilapidated West Jordan flour mill in 1979 one of 44 mills Mr Gardner built in the Salt Lake Valley in the 1880s She and her husband Chris Christensen then transformed the mill into a lucrative country store and restaurant by playing off Mr Gardner's name and reputation Now Ms Long is returning the favor She recently opened a museum dedicated to Archibald Gardner's life and achievements at the Gardner Historic Retail Village 1075 W 7800 South The museum housed in a renovated log cabin is the only one in Utah dedicated to a polygamist Ms Long said A former Tooele County sheriff donated the cabin to Ms Long last year She moved the structure built in 1866 from Clover Tooele County to her village and began collecting items for the museum e local artist painted a portrait of Mr Gardner surrounded by smaller pictures of his 11 wives that greets visitors after entry fee into they drop a an antique cheese mold at the door To one side is a case containing original West Jordan mill sales slips used in the 1880s and early 1900s An old flour sack found in life-siz- ' 25-ce- nt one of the mill's sifters rests next to various letters and post cards At one end is an original copy of a program from the 50th anniversary Pioneer Jubilee held in 1897 But the museum's true magic is within a large glass case along the back wall A collage of Gardner memorabilia most of which was donated by Archibald Gardner's descendants detail his life and those of his 11 wives A silk dress and snuff box used by Margaret Livingston Mr Gardner's first wife are displayed In a lower portion of the glass case are liquor bottles thought to be owned by his fifth wife Elizabeth Lewis A black dress worn by his last wife Mary Larsen is also shown The centerpiece of the display is a large glass cabinet containing many of Mr Gardner's personal possessions A picture taken when he was named a Church of Saints Jesus Christ of Latter-dabishop hangs in an antique frame along with tools he used to build his mills His original grave marker now sits outside the museum's door "This is a rich piece of history He's related to my mill and has become a daily part of my life" Ms Long said The museum is open Tuesday from 11 am to 3 pm Thursday from 1 to 4 pm and Saturday from 11 am to 4 pm Ms Long has come to know many of Mr Gardner's descendants She has become an honor y i1f te ':?:'''' q eAc-- ' I '' I :!' i ' : i t- -
