Show - : - -- - 44 1$ 40 44r S E3 The Salt Lake Tribune Sunday June 161991 1991 Utah Film and Video Festival: Shorts worth watching 1 a hilarious look at an annual twin convention in Twinsburgh Ms Marcoux and her identical twin Michele are not the typical conventioneer They do not have rhyming names they never dress alike and they have a history of conflict Nevertheless they agreed to attend Twin Days in Twinsburgh where more than 2500 identically dressed sets of twins converge annually in a celebration of sameness Intercut with surreal scenes of twins finishing each other's sentences are interviews with Sue and Michele in which they express ambivalence toward their twin identi- Terry Orme By THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE ' The paradox of the Utah Short Film and Video Festival is that people in places like San Francisco New York and Los Angles know more about it than do people in Utah The festival — a national competition showcasing an eclectic array of short films and videotapes has never completely caught on F: with local audiences However it continues to attract some of the most promising new filmmakers as well as those dedi- cated to careers on the g banks of the g mainstream This year's festival — running Wednesday through Saturday — should be one of the best ever a remarkable collection of work some of it from artists much of it locally produced More than 70 films and videos are on tap Audiences will have the chance to see highlights each night at 7:30 pm in the Salt Lake Art Center Auditorium 20 S West Temple On Saturday the festival ends with a "wrap party" and awards presentations Mary Crawley director of the Utah Film and Video Center which presents the festival says its purpose is twofold: "To provide Utah film and video makers with the artistic 'testing ground' of a national competition and to provide public exposure for some of the best films and videos in the country" Judges for the competition are Michael Nash former Salt Lake City video artist who currently is media arts curator at Long Beach Museum of Art and Francine Marchetti director of New York's CinemaWorks film center Some of the festival's highlights far-flun- movie-makin- "It's all in the clothes" says Sue about the other twins "If they were naked they wouldn't look alike" Their experience ends when they win first place in the contest for twins who live the farthest apart Sue Marcoux is a recent graduate of the master's documentary film program at Stanford University "Speak Then Persephone" from San Francisco filmmakers out-of-sta- te I Scott McGehee and David Siegel is an impressionistic interpretation in a modern college milieu In the myth Persephone the daughter of Zeus and Demeter is abducted by Hades to be his wife in the lower world Hades agrees to allow her to return to her parents once a year and hence there is spring In the film Persephone is an art school student coerced by her domineering mother to leave her boyfriend for the summer and return home to Orange County Messrs McGehee and Siegel took the grand prize at the Utah Short Film and Video Festival in 1990 with "Birds Past" Also from San Francisco comes the documentary "Spray-paint- " a video essay by Nick Gorski on painter and muralist Scott Wil- follow From San Francisco comes the winner of this year's Student Academy Award competition "Twins-burg- h Some Kind of Weird Thing" Directed by Sue coux the 1 liams Mr Williams' medium is stencils and spraypaint He "seizes and appropriates" pop images from books and magazines then mixes them for an unusual brand of art Mar- documentary is -
