SACRAMENTO Calif (AP) -Shu- mans and animals have been found in or near wildlife refuges in six Western states according to a report published Sunday The new findings by federal sci- entists represent the first evidence of selenium outside of California in levels high enough to be a risk to humans who eat too much tainted fish or fowl the Sacramento Bee said The high selenium counts were found in Montana Utah Wyoming along the lower Colorado River between Arizona and Nevada and at the Salton Sea and the Tulare Lake basin in California according to the Bee which said it obtained its information from internal Department of Interior reports Government officials plan to check for selenium at 10 other SAN DIEGO (AP) — A California Highway Patrol officer accused of strangling a college student on lengthy personal inquiries the witnesses testified in a hearing that began last week Peyer is the second highway patrol officer to be charged with committing murder while on duty George Gwaltney was convicted of raping and shooting Robin Bishop of Cedar City Utah after she pulled over in a traffic stop in 1982 "I rolled the window down just a couple of inches beDana Breslow testicause I felt a Tainted farm irrigation runoff is believed to be the source of contamination at most of the sites the Bee said Selenium is a trace element that is found naturally in the soil and can enter bodies of water through runoff In very small amounts it is an essential part of the diet for humans and some animals but it can be toxic in higher concentrations Waterfowl with selenium levels up to 21 times greater than is considered safe for humans were found in farm drainage ponds in the Tulare Lake basin in California in Stewart Lake and the Ouray National Wildlife Refuge in Utah at Benton and Freezeout lakes in Montana in tributaries to the North Platte River near Casper Wyo and in the Stillwater National Wildlife Refuge in Nevada self-defen- of spiring in Anderson although the plot failed Eldridge 34 pleaded guilty to conspiring with Bird in her husband’s death and was notified in her prison cell Friday that she faces a new murder in his charge of death Geary County Sheriff Bill Deppish also hinted that someone else may also be charged in Anderson’s death Bird said he is innocent and blamed his convictions on his association with Eldridge who the newspaper described as “lascivious” and on small town gossip He admitted for the first time that he and his secretary — who married Randall Eldridge before she went to prison — were lovers but only after their spouses died “I rose up as a knight in shining armor and felt that she was being mistreated and needed my help” he said “I was alone she was alone and we had all these kids he three she four “Little did I know she would turn out to be the dragon herself” Bird 36 said it is unfair for the movie to be shown before he has exhausted his appeals former lover’s husband described Sunday night’s network television movie about the case as a sham CBS docudrama The two-pa“Murder Ordained” is based on the July 1983 death of Bird’s wife Sandy and the death the following November of Martin Anderson first husband of Lorna Anderson Eldridge Bird’s lover and secretary at his church Bird said it cannot be authentic because no one involved with the movie interviewed the four principal characters two of whom are dead “If Lorna has not talked to them and I have not talked to them where did they get those scenes? The bottom line is they’re fiction” Bird said in an interview from his prison cell published Sunday in The Kansas City Star Mike Robe who wrote and directed the movie said he based much of the story on Eldridge’s interviews with reporters — some of which she has recanted — transcripts of Bird’s two trials and newspaper articles about the case the newspaper said Bird former pastor of Faith Lutheran Church in Emporia was con rt A3 Monday May 4 1987 ft tp I'' m Ivii f ‘U-f- n — Anociiltd Miter Pratt Liurphoto CraigTeyer is the second California trooper in several years 'Jf — to be charged with murdering a young woman while on duty had ordered him to vacate was destroyed by fire Fire officials said Sunday the blaze was set by vandals BOSTON (UPI) — Urban hermit Bill Britt returned from an appearance on “The David Letterman Show” to find the wigwam officials """"""" 1 CLIP & SAVE iall Shr i’akr eribunr (USPS Salt £akr Sfibunr 143 South Main SEEN ON TELEVISION Dial Telephone Numbers Do you need information want sports scores have a news story or feature you want to talk about?
