Show 4W Sunday May 3 1987 The Salt Lake Tribune How to calm down the natural way By Judy Magid Tribune Lifestyle Writer Dr Bernard Green compares taking a tranquilizer for calming anxiety to putting the top on a kettle of boiling water to stop the heat “The cure is far worse than the disease when anxiety is the problem and tranquilizers are used as the solution” he said in a telephone interview from his Manhattan NY office ! A psychotherapist and author of Goodbye Blues: A Guide to Breaking the New York City) Dublin-hor- n Tranquilizer Habit the Natural Way (McGraw-Hil- l Dr Green thinks Americans are more prone to "pop pills” than are Europeans “I practiced psychology in both London and Paris before coming to the United States in 1968 1 don’t feel there is as much pill popping in London and ?aris as there is here “In America everyone is looking for happiness in a capsule Basically here we’re looking for a magic pill” His news is both bad and good “There isn’t one (a magic pill) But you can still feel good You have to put forth the effort to help yourself Meditation getting in touch with yourself in some way is wonderful Talking out your problems is another Feeling good involves a conscious program to propel yourself to feeling good not just a pill or a drug “Ultimately you have to take responsibility for yourself" Dr Green explained that tranquilizers which calm people and which lift moods are similar but differ in chemical composition ) "Alcohol and cigarettes are depressants rather than stimulants” he ts “Valium is a minor tranquilizer used for tension and anxiety “It’s very addictive After using it for four to six weeks it’s hard to give it up And the addiction can be physical as well as mental I “You are not yourself when you take valium And the same things happen pretty much with any tranquilizers ” ’ In Dr Green's opinion increased use causes dependence and lessens sexual desire It can depress respiration cause coma and death He is adamant in his distaste for tranquilizers “I am a psychologist and do not prescribe drugs But if I were a medical doctor I wouldn’t prescribe tranquilizers Tranquilizers have such varied side effects that they can cause more problems instead of curing the one at Band” i In a recent article in Redbook magazine (May 1987) Dr Green talked about disorganized people learning to change habits His advice applies to those habits causing people to be disorganized or drug dependent The first step he said is to understand the reason for the predicament The second is to set small achievable goals “For people willing to take charge of their lives there are various natural ways to combat anxiety" he continued the world’s oldest tranquilizer is one Vitamins come under the i “Food same heading because they are found in food but easier to take in tablet form Exercise is vital and meditation is ideal Talking out your problems with a friend can be as beneficial as seeing a therapist” he said ) He recommended vitamin B3 niacinamide to take the edge off anxiety j “The big difference between a vitamin pill and a drug is that the vitamin does not have side effects or withdrawal problems” Dr Green said He added that sources of niacinamide are fish nuts wheat germ soy beans brewers yeast and liver “If you ate these foods regularly fish in particular you would not have so much anxiety” he said “Many foods can cause anxiety as well Sugar is a villain in any form And Caffeine Caffeine is probaby the most common stimulant used in America “There are a lot of horror stories about caffeine but the truth is that it's never as bad or as good as many people believe However it is a drug on which many of us become dependent and which when eliminated from our diet can ipiprove both health and happiness” Tea has half the caffeine that coffee has but adding milk to the tea takes effect away any anxiety-causin- g “If you take a hot glass of milk — it must be hot — it makes you tranquil and helps you to sleep" he said If you add a tablespoon of chocolate he continued you defeat the purpose because chocolate contains sugar and caffeine Along with proper nutrition to combat anxiety and stress Dr Green recommended exercise “When you exercise you release into the neurosystem are what cause ‘jogger's high' You should do it In the morning “It takes 15 to 3(1 minutes of that kind of exercise to release the not as long as it takes for aerobic exercise or to lose weight” He suggested walking or skipping rope as a counter against aggravation “Sunlight is important because it helps create vitamin D and is a calming agent y “Meditation is the oldest known agent in the world It means emptying the mind of all thoughts closing your eyes and going within yourself It is easy and it works “It can make several changes within your body such as decreasing blood anti-anxiet- pressure" Dr Green also believes in talking out one’s problems to ease stress and to avoid anxiety “Holding everything inside is not good Many times a close friend can be more effective than a therapist A person can have various different friends with whom heshe shares different problems such as business problems shared with one person and emotional problems with another” The main thrust of another book Getting Over Getting High (Quill 1985) is that people should assume responsibility for their happiness and not take pills Mystery surrounds dove on headstone top of that particular grave" For years people wondered about the dove but only recently has that curiosity been transformed into action The National Park Service has issued a nationwide plea for help in finding the answer There have been plenty of theories In a letter to the park service a woman in Maine noted New Englanders in the 1800s dropped the r’s in the middle and end of words and suggested those who buried Tuttle might have thought his name was actually Turtle and placed a turtle dove on the headstone Ranger Jim Small recalled another theory “If you added up all the numbers in the row and divided it by some other number you came up with some number out of the Bible and that number happened to be the number of the (Tuttle) grave" Small said “Some people said that's why the dove was put there “Some of these are kind of crazy But I guess you can't rule out any- By Jim Barber United Press International ANDERSONVILLE Ga — The mysterious stone dove sits atop only one of the 16000 tarnished marble headstones at the Civil War cemetery baffling historians who want to know why it distinguishes a Yankee soldier's grave The headstone adorned with the dove in Andersonville National Cemetery marks the grave of Cpl Lewis S Tuttle a Union soldier and Maine native Confederate troops captured Tuttle and held him at the infamous Andersonville prisoner-of-wa- r camp Records show 12912 Union Army prisoners died in the camp some from wounds but most from starvation and disease Tuttle died there of diarrhea less than eight months after joining the army “We really don’t have any answers about the dove but it would be nice to know why it’s there” said John Tucker superintendent of the Andersonville National Historic Site “We can do a lot of interesting speculation until we find out the real reason it’s on thing” Tucker expects the process to continue slowly because there are so few records surviving from the period “It’s a dark nebulous area that we don't know much about” he said “We do know that Congress authorized marble monuments in all national cemeteries in 1877-187but we don’t even know when the headstones were put up” What historians do know is that Tuttle born in Saco Maine was 29 when he left behind a career as a cooper — one who makes and repairs containwooden tubs and barrel-typ- e ers — and enlisted in the army April fact-findin- g Hot tropical colors in prom dresses By Jennifer Anderson Prom dresses in hot tropical colors gre just waiting for this spring's graduates to snap them up The favorite dress this season is short strapless ruffled and ever so feminine I Dear Jennifer: What height heel Should I wear with a short white dress with a full crinoline skirt that I am Rearing to my graduation? — Cp ' Dear CP: Wear a pump with a litd shoe will tle heel A throw off the proportions of your short full skirt i Study the look of a low heel and mirthen a high heel in a ror to get a feeling of what proportion really means Proportion is only understood by making these comparisons and training your eye to observe shapes in relation to one another In time you will be able to combine shapes into pleasing proportions When that day comes your problem of “putting yourself together” will be over Dear Jennifer: My date for the high-heele- full-lengt- h prom is a bit shorter than I am but to make it worse I have to wear high heels with my dress or else it drags on the floor Should I shorten my dress and wear low heels? Or should I tell my date what the problem is and see if he cares? — DM Dear DM: A classic dilemma And all in your own mind Since you are the one who thinks it’s a problem why not just shorten your dress and be comfortable in lower heels The bonus is that you won’t have to slouch hunch or shrink up to try to make yourself look smaller Even the prettiest gown looks better on a woman who stands up straight and carries herself gracefully Dudley Moore loves women who are a whole lot taller than he is and maybe your date feels the same Why not ask him? Dear Jennifer: All the guys are getting the girls corsages for the prom but my dress is strapless and would EV2 2 C ©HusqvSra rZEi VIKING Dr Bernard Green believes Americans are more likely to “pop pills” looking for a magic cure than are Europeans He advocates a natural way to break the tranquilizer habit look funny with flowers What should I do? — AS Dear AS: You can pin a corsage to your handbag or wear it around your wrist like a bracelet If you tell your date in advance a florist can make a spray of flowers attached to a comb to wear in your 9 hair Dear Jennifer: I tried on some strapless dresses for our prom but I didn’t buy one because I have big bones that stick up on my shoulders and look funny What can I do about this before the prom? — GD Dear GD: Twenty pounds might pad you out enough to cover these bones a little but I certainly don’t recommend that In most cases those bony protuberances like the nose on your face are just part of what makes you you You can ignore them — many models certainly do — or like any other feature you would rather not show off you can pick a dress with a strap or sleeve that cleverly conceals them 5 1864 Tuttle served in Company F of the 32nd Maine Infantry with his two brothers David and Loren Lewis and David were captured at the same time and imprisoned at Andersonville David Tuttle died 20 days after his brother and also was buried at Andersonville His headstone does not have a dove on it Loren Tuttle was discharged from the army after being shot through the shoulder during a battle shortly after his brothers were captured The Andersonville National Cemetery today contains 16000 headstones but only one — the marker at the grave of Cpl Lewis S Tuttle — has a dove on it How near is the Park Service to solving the mystery? “I don’t think we’re even close yet” Small said Back pain common ill By Dr Neil Solomon Dear Dr Solomon: Almost every- one I know has complained of back pain at one time or another I've also got an aching back and I’d like to know if you could tell me what causes it and what could be done about it I’m sure a lot of people would like to know — Paul Gary Ind Dear Paul: The causes of back pain are many and varied Some of the more common causes include gradual wear and tear of the spine weak muscles and muscle spasm as a result of overuse anu stress both physical and emotional Of course more serious diseases can also be responsible for back pain Just as there are varied causes of back pain there are varied remedies Rest is one and sometimes complete bed rest becomes necessary Heat may be helpful in some cases and cold in others Ointments back braces traction and exercise have been used with some success and medications may help ease the pain in some patients If back pain persists you should arrange to see your physician The causes and remedies are so varied as I have indicated that examination by a physician is sometimes advisable He or she may also be able to show you how you might be able to prevent a recurrence Dear Dr Solomon: My closest friend has confided in me that she tries to avoid having sexual relations with her husband because of the nasty way he acts toward her family I’ve told her that this isn’t natural and that she ought to see a psychiatrist so that whatever psychological problems she has can be worked out To make it short she says that the only problem she has is the way her husband acts toward her family and she doesn't need a psychiatrist We would both welcome your opinion on this matter Neil TR Little Rock Ark Dear Mrs R: Whether or not your friend has a psychological problem for which she needs professional help ' is not clear from this distance How- ever her avoidance of sexual rela-tions with her husband in itself is not an indication of such problems In one study of married women who complained of inhibited sexual desire no evidence was found of ft serious p$y- chological problem The jnvestigators concluded that the women’s attitudes were related to the quality of their relationships rather than to any identifiable emotional disturbance Dear Dr Solomon: There has been a lot of publicity about the fact that women lose bone as they grow older What I would like to know is what is there about growing older that makes this happen? — Peg Washington DC ' Dear Peg: The main cause of osteoporosis (bone loss) in women is loss of estrogen a sex hormone This hor- -' mone is affected by menopause whether the menopause is natural or " is the result of surgery For Jeanne Montreal: Measles in a pregnant woman does not present the same degree of risk as does rubella (German measles) in a pregnant worn-- ’ an ‘ 1 !
