also received a small amount for each fire or training meeting they attended New volunteers are being added to the department under a new benefit package Roekwood said there have been several volunteers who joined and stayed with the department for the community service "We have had very little turnover in the last 12 years with the exception of people moving” Roekwood said “Excitement is part of it too" he added By Greg Duerden Tribune Correspondent ROOSEVELT The Roosevelt Volunteer Fire Department knew it needed to replace one of its trucks This need was underlined recently when an insurance inspection listed Roosevelt with only one fire engine in service even though it has two The fire department has received bids for a new truck and updating of the old one Roosevelt Fire Chief Tim Rock wood said the bid estimates were $200000 Rock wood is also part of a department reorganization passed in May 1986 by the City Council Previously fire department officers had two-yerotating terms Now the Roosevelt City Council has asked the fire department to select a fire chief willing to stay longer than one term Roekwood was chosen and will have renewable two year terms as chief His assistant is Mike Jensen m charge of equipment maintenance The chief is responsible for sizing up fires the department is called to fight and must know the best way to attack the fire without causing unnecessary damage The chief also writes reports of the fires for insurance companies investigates all fires to determine cause and makes the city's wood stove inspections Part of the change in the investigation has been "excellent” and has produced "good" recommendations for preventing another such tragedy The development of technology will lead to building space stations for research and possible trips to Mars schedule former astronaut Charles Conrad told a Utah State University convocation Conrad charged the program has not been “focused'' correctly since 1967 and he added there has Provo PROVO (AP) — Eighth Circuit Judge James G Knudsen has died at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center afler a yearlong battle with cancer authorities say Knudsen who died Wednesday at veteran of the age 59 was a bench and had served as a circuit judge since the court’s creation in 1978 A lifelong resident of Provo and Mormon Church member Knudsen was born on Jan 3 1928 He received his education from the Provo City schools and graduated with honors from Provo High School in 1946 He attended Brigham Young Uni V V versity for two years interrupting his education for two years to serve a church mission in California He returned to BYU in 1950 and later graduated with a political science degree Knudsen then served in the U S Air Force for four years with overseas assignments in Libya and Crete After his discharge from the Air Force he entered the University of Utah Law School graduating in 1959 He was named judge pro tem for the Provo City Court in 1964 and in 1967 was appointed a
