Sunday Morning— January 4 1987 Section E Page f '- 1 1 i By Ktri Schreiner Tribune Staff Writer i It’s Monday and Ron Carlson is in Pioneer Park staring off in the distance Before long he begins pointing telling stories of playing “cops league” baseball as a boy: Over there was where he went to bat at home plate and there to the west is where he made all those er- ? i i rors “I never hit a home run here Not even one” he says Carlson’s elusive home run may be coming but on a field of a different sort His third book The News of the World will be published Jan 12 by W W Norton Advanced opinion of the book has been favorable on all sides Author John Irving has said that Carlson’s stories possess “a certain holiness bestowed on ordinary things on ordinary lives that is a powerful reminder of the late John Cheever” Publisher’s Weekly echoes the praise “In these brief tales that immediately capture the reader with their vitality and sense of immediacy Carlson attempts to preserve some illusions to maintain that the simple rituals of life can and should provide pleasure and continuity” In a literary period rank with cynicism Carlson’s stories cast optimistic light on the human condition His "news” is good news — sincerely realistically good In part explanation for the success of this positive approach can be found within the author Carlson presents a sharp contrast to the tortured brooding writer who has reached mythological proportions in the modern mind He is — unapologetically — a happy man “I’ve had a great life” he says “I like the people I live with I like my work I sound like Pollyanna’s brother but that’s not it I know what it is to be an adult I’ve had misery “I’ve known writers that have terrible lives and are very prolific writing like crazy” he continues “I have a great affection for my life I've had moments of darkness and look forward to more Two things I’ve learned is that you have to keep your health and your sense of humor I think you’ve got to be life affirming somewhere to be creative” A native of Utah Carlson was born in Logan and raised on Salt Lake’s west side He graduated from West High School and in 1972 received his master’s degree in English from the University of Utah Carlson his wife Elaine and sons Colin 1 and Nicholas 2 are currently residing in Tempe Ariz where Carlson is at Arizona State University For the holidays Carlson is back in his home writer-in-residen- See E-- 5 Column 1 s Massacred PeaceTheatre bTARZ ELLEN TRACY STARZ MONO!
