not improved Mrs said “There is a chance that our fire insurance rating could go to 10 from 7 if something isn't done” she said “That would mean an approximate $103 a year increase on an $80000 brick grandmaster I asked if he would accept me as a student” Mr Berry said "1 had no idea who he was" The grandmaster was Shu Ying Hou the "king of Chi Kung’’ according to Mr Berry Chi Kung is a health breathing exercise for internal organs The hard style of Chi Kung requires requires great concentration since practitioners break boards with their heads and hands Grandmaster Hou set up a series of tests to determine Mr Berry’s interest in martial arts "He set up this fee structure and I had to pay him $1000 a month for three years” Mr Berry said "And he'd call me up at 2 a m and want me to go over to his house "It was difficult doing these things especially since at the time I was preparing for a CPA exam "But while I was studying with Grandmaster Hou I got through a lot of doors I welcome in Dan Berry's studio because when he teaches someone martial arts his goal is to create a warrior “I don't accept people into my academy who are hotheads whose only intent is go out and hurt Escnma and Arms — are relatively new to Americans Weapons like sticks blades and short staffs are used Mr Berry said this "smorgasbord” of styles is important It teaches martial artists that the weapon is themselves not a stick or knife The medley also teaches people how to defend themselves if they lose their weapon he said Mr Berry’s introduction to martial arts started with Judo at 11 years old He continued learning through high school and into college practicing almost every day 4 to 5 hours a day While studying accounting at University of Iowa Mr Berry started learning a variety
