Show 6B The Salt Lake Tribune lt8 September 12 Monday of the Facts Wallop Yellowstone Fire Critics Ignorant The criticism of the National Park Service and the way it has handled this summer's fires at Yellowstone National Park by Sen Malis a cheap shot by colm Wallop an uninformed lawmaker looking to make easy political points The Wyoming politician has called for the resignation of national Park Service director Wilfiam Mott largely because Mott is telling the truth about natural consequences of fire A nation which has grown up with Smokey the Bear and the mythical slogan ‘‘only you can prevent forest fires" as well as a deep love for Yellowstone National Park might be tempted to believe the nonsense being spread by politicians like Wallop who are using the YelNFS as a scapegoat for the lowstone fires Blaming William Mott for the fires at Yellowstone Park makes as much sense as saying Malcolm Wallop is responsible for this summer’s drought In the first place the policy of letting some wildfires burn in Yellowstone National Park was an appropriate one in June No one could predict that the unprecedented drought and wind conditions which have hit the entire United States this summer would make conditions in July August and September ripe for a catastrophic fire When Park Service officials realized the danger to both property and man because of these dry conditions its employees actively and often courageously worked to suppress these fires Millions of dollars have been spent Firefighters have missed weddings effort to probirths and funerals in an t tect both private property and the public Instead of being criticized bv local businessmen and public officials the efforts of firefighters should be praised In view of the uncontrolled and unprecedented nature of the Yellowstone fires the fact that precious little private prop-ert-y and no human life has been lost is a tribute to these people's courage and skill It should also be noted that the North Fork fire which is threatening Old Faithful is a blaze that started on the Targhee National Forest and was fought from the first day it was discovered The fact is that under the dry conditions in the greater Yellowstone area no amount of human effort was going to control this fire If politicians like Wallop and some of his overzealous constituents will wait until ecologists and range scientists study the effects of 1 More importantly just as the eruption of Mount St Helens allowed scientists to study the forest so will the fires at Yellowstone al low ecologists to find out how quickly the blazes might actually help improve conditions for wildlife “Ultimately what is happening is going to be good for the park and tthe ecosvstem” says Lawson LaGate of the Sierra Club who has a masters degree in forestry and range management "From a wildlife standpoint it will be very good for grazing animals and a real boon for the elk Frankly I get very angry when I hear a congressman from Wyoming in total ignorance say these fires have sterilized everything That man doesn’t know what he is talking about Frankly I am outraged when I hear Sen Wallop call for the resignation of Mr Mott" LaGate says the grasses will return right away There may be some blackened trunks and some gray on the ground But soon bright green plants will return Lewis feels a review of how the fires were handled and the National Park Service's “No Burn” policy would be appropriate In the Outdoors By V 1 Tom Wharton the Yellowstone blazes before condemning a policy they obviously don’t understand they might be surprised to find the Yellowstone fires not only help tourism but prove to be a benefit to wildlife That is the thought of Ed Lewis the executive director of the Greater Yellowstone Coalition a private organization established to protect and preserve the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem “You may have a tremendous number of people coming to the park to see it after the fires" he said "Many people who have seen Yellowstone and have no reason to return are man-cause- d “A good thorough review of the policy and what transpired this summer is an excellent idea” he says “After people and property are no longer in danger we may find some mistakes were made If there were we can learn from those mistakes But to draw conclusions and make accusations without knowing the facts constitutes political haymaking and not intelligent discourse Obviously this has been an event of nature that man cannot control To be looking for a scapegoat is very different a experience” IU all-ou- looking forward to now IF" counterproductive" The reality is that one of the reasons national parks exist is to allow certain pieces of land to exist in a natural state Yellowstone per- haps more than most parks has been shaped by some of the most monumental forces in the history of this planet Seismic geothermal volcanic and now natural fires have shaped this amazing and wonderful place Apparently Sen Wallop and some of the businessmen around Yellowstone who have condemned the way the park service has handled the fire situation this summer are totally ignorant of both what a national park is supposed to be and the role fire plays m a natural ecosystem I CU1 I dai er c mg ma wa nic enc rec I at tel the dai att I jec Ral de I Opi er Tribune Sports Scoreboard Angels 3 8 Rangers OUJFOCMA
