in my home state" Garn said By Sena Taylor Tribune Correspondent PARK CITY Meeting on the Hill is commonplace for US senators but when the hill is in Park City and the lawmakers are in ski wear instead of suits and ties it’s unique Eleven US senators and one cabinet member gathered in Park City last weekend for the second annual Senators’ Ski Cup benefiting Primary Children’s Hospital The event concluded Sunday Nearly $50000 was raised last year and used for children whose families were unable to pay medical bills “But even more important for me is the fact the tournament is a fundraising event for Primary Children’s Hospital” Hatch agreed “It’s a great thing for Utah and I think its going to do well for the hospital because of its large number of benefactors” As the cup benefits the state Hatch said “it’s tough to get that many senators to come to anything away from ” Washington “The event brings a lot of business people here who can see we have terrific skiing and a variety of lifestyles They go away very impressed with Utah” he added Stein Eriksen ski director at Deer Valley said “the senators are fantastic I love their attitude and their spirit they are so excited about the racing This event is only going to grow and grow and soon the senators will be going back and saying ‘let’s spend less time at the White House and more time in Park City’ ” Secretary of Energy John Herring-tonsai- d the skiing is “undescribable” He is a skier whose duties in Washington have diminished his time on the slopes over the last eight years He said Park City is his favorite ski area adding that this event is beneficial to the lawmakers “We have a good time together I find this atmosphere very productive We talk about business on the chairlift and it’s a good environment” Craig Badmi chairman of the Senators’ Cup and vice president of Park City ski area is glad to host the event once again “The senators are skiing really well and I noticed that Bob Hasten of Wisconsin and Orrin Hatch have really improved over last year Jake’s skiing is consistent as always I think everyone is pretty happy We’ve got great weather again and it went very that Sponsors hoped to double amount this year The event is sponsored by Sen Jake Garn who has continued this year to impress senate members with his skiing even though he’s only skiing “fair and average” he said Regarding his race opponents Garn said “let’s say I beat most of them but they are probably a lot faster than me” Showing progress in his skiing form this year is Sen Orrin Hatch who has been dubbed the most improved skier Hatch’s first time on skis was at last year’s Ski Cup “It’s a miracle to make it down the hill once” he said of the ski races On Saturday 16 teams captained by a senator or cabinet member raced on dual giant-slaloer m courses at Park City Ski Area The racers performed time trials Friday in order to be paired for the dual slalom The senators and their sponsors later participated in grudge matches which involved participants who agreed on wagers and handicaps between themselves The wagers had to be at least $50 But sponsors say its all in good fun for a good cause
