School’s football program Today he is just one of many Salt Lake physicians who volunteer time as doctors to valley high schools Dr Lloyd was one of the main proponents in instigating a team doctor program for Salt Lake’s schools in 1970 He was honored with the Special Award of Merit by the Salt Lake County Medical Society in November for his role in establishing the program but he stresses he was not alone in building the program “I feel uneasy about receiving awards and recognition for the program because there are so many other doctors who played key roles and have been doing this much longer than I have” he said “Dr Owen Smoot was the orthopedic consultant at West when I arrived and he By Patti Auer Tribune Staff Writer To say that Highland High has a good hockey team is an understatement As Coach Jim Levy put it: “If I were a betting man I wouldn’t bet against us” Odds show that no one should bet against the Rams Last year with a squad full of sophomores they won the state title This year they return the state’s No 1 goalie — Jeff Levy — two top scorers — Scott Levy and Chris Thomas — and three standout defensemen — Robert VanAusdal Larry Limb and Jason Wright If predictions prove correct Highland will take home its seventh championship trophy this season The Rams have already compiled a 0 record They have yet to play 7-- Libraries Host Weight Class Lose those state The two teams face off Jan 9 at the Cottonwood Rink Tradition and dedication are two reasons for the Rams’ success according to Mr Levy “We have a fairly comparable team from last year There is a good hockey tradition in the school and we have a great junior-varsit- y program I guess the ‘home’ HYGEA rink helped too” he explained HYGEA is no longer an ice arena so Highland has been forced to compete with other teams for ice time “Ice time is very limited so we do with what we can Of course we appreciate everything we can get But Highland has a very strong off-ic- e program We play soccer and team handball and do a lot of running Bountiful Hockey Squad Improves By Patti Auer Tribune Staff Writer BOUNTIFUL — Bountiful High hockey Coach Mike Holmes smiles when he thinks of his team and its record No his hockey squad isn’t in first place In fact the Braves don’t have much of a chance to win the state title in the AA division this year But they won’t finish last And that is good news to the veteran coch Bountiful has finished in the cellar ever since it joined the league in 1975 Not this year though The Braves are among the top four teams in the AA division Quiteadifferencefrom willing students and I don’t see a program that is just made up of doctors for every sport” he said “I think it would be more efficient and reasonable if we were to teach students how to administer first aid and to treat injuries and then place them with the teams” Since the program started Dr P Lloyd said the team coaches have been relieved of the burden of worrying about treating injured athletes and he feels that the number of injuries has decreased “We are there to give needed first aid until outside care arrives Our role however doesn’t stop there” he said “We also help rehabilitate athletes and try to direct kids who can’t play anymore into other sports 4 or areas that deal with sports “We are not there to tell them they can’t play but our philosophy which means we look to is long-tera student’s future when it comes to health” Highland Hopes to Ice 7th Hockey Title 4-- A 3-- A helped me immensely” Other physicians who have played a large role in making the program successful according to Dr Lloyd are Barry Olsen physical therapist and Randy Watson resident from the University of Utah who work with him at West High Team doctors are primarily reserved for football teams but Dr Lloyd said the committee of doctors originating the program is trying to expand it to include all sports “Right now all of the high schools have volunteer doctors for their football teams They are spotty in other sports because of the time involved with such sports as basketball which play two times a week It’s hard to find someone to be at every game” he said Dr Lloyd said they are attempting to initiate student trainers who would attend all games when doctors could not make them “I am a firm supporter of training last season when they were The difference this year has been experience “It’s largely luck of the draw on how many kids you get who have experience This year half the team knows about hockey In the past only one or two would have experience” Mr Holmes said “The big difficulty is when one half knows about the sport and the others don’t It’s hard to set up a program for everybody” Bountiful has several players with plenty of ice time Chad Little Ryan Williams Derek Johnson and Jason Holmes have all been playing hockey since they were little Goalie 8 Shane Klein is only in his second his coach plays “like he’s been on skates for year but according to years” Having inexperienced skaters is not unusual for any of the 18 league teams The players filtering in from the lower leagues would make about four teams The rest of the participants are players who decided to give it a try “This sport forces them to learn very quickly They don’t ride the bench regardless of their abilitites They have to pick it up relatively quickly” Mr Holmes explained “They’ll finish third or so which is better than finishing last They’ve already done better than last year” These players are dedicated to the success of the Highland team” the veteran coach said Two of those ‘dedicated’ players are sons Jeff and Scott Hockey has been a part of their lives for more than 10 years “They’ve played on competition teams for a number of years and have had great coaching They have a great background for leading high school teams” Levy said "When Jeff was 5 and Scott was 6 they saw a mite hockey game and they thought it might be fun That year they signed up and they’ve been playing ever since ” The state tournament is set for the end of February You can be certain that Highland — and the Levys — will be there in full force Basketball Leagues Taking
