Show 4 The Salt Lake Tribune, Wednesday, December , 9, Race for U.N. Leader Thrown Open li81 By Michael J Berlin Washington Post Writer The election of the next UNITED NATIONS U N secretary general was thrown open Tuesday as the last candidate in the impasse, Tanzanian Foreign Minister Salim A. Salim, stepped aside Salim announced at a press conference here that he would temixjrardy withdraw his name from the balloting, and the Security Council promptly gathered to consider new contenders. The other original candidate, incumbent Kurt Waldheim, who was seeking an unprecedented third five year term, pulled out of the balloting Thursday. Rut since Salim was the nominee of the African nations and the movement, other candidates were reluctant to jump in so long as he remained in the race Remains Available for Draft The latest move by Salim, who like Waldheim indicated he remains available for a draft, is expected to bring forward as many as a score of hopefuls, virtually all of them from the Third World. council had deadlocked on 16 ballots The during the last six weeks, as the Chinese continually vetoed Waldheim and the United States blocked Salim. Nobody Is Set Against Them The strength of diplomatic technicians such as like Dadzie and de Cuellar lies in the fact that Waldheim 10 years ago nobody is set against them and they are not seen as threats to the interests of any power bloc It would be awkward for Washington to veto Castaneda -f- iguratively the manfrorr nextdooi Yet he has demonstrated within the Mexican spectrum that he is not subservient to the Americans. . an international figure with an Sadruddin has Iranian passport and a Harvard degree support from the West, as well as a record of dealing equitably with all blocs on delicate refugee questions. So far, the Soviets have been reticent. The council will not begin consideration of the new group of contenders until late this week or early next week. First it must give the candidates time to step for.vard; then the members must get voting instructions from home. Time Pressing Council Most council members would prefer an informal sounding-ou- t process before voting resumes to see if there is one person who might attain the requisite nine-vot- e majority and escape a veto. But time is pressing the council because the General Assembly, which must ratify its nominee for secretary general, is scheduled to adjourn on Dec. 15. The burden in this next round is likely to fall on the Sov let Union. Washington and Peking are believed to be amenable to several of the new candidates, but most diplomats believe Moscow would like to hold out for an extension of Waldheims current term, which expires Dec. 31. China, however, maintains its opposition to any extension for Waldheim, and it would be politically awkward for the Soviets to veto all the new Third World contenders. Among those believed to have the best chance to escape a veto are Javier Perez de Cuellar of Peru; Mexican Foreign Minister Jorge Castaneda; Ken d demonstrator was at scene of federal trial on ansas' as Bonzo, Ark-identifi- law. creation-scienc- e Sponsor Gives View Of Creationist Law By Bill Simmons Associated Press Writer LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) The state senator who sponsored the bill that became Arkansas law on teaching creation science testified Tuesday he did so partly because he believes in a literal interpretation of the Bible. State Sen. James Hoisted testified on the second day of the trial of an American Civil Liberties Union lawsuit attacking the law as an unconstitutional establishment of religion. Hoisted told U.S. District Judge Wiliiam Overton that the law does not violate the First Amendment because it doesnt mention any particular god and bans the use of religious writings. Writings Dishonest Earlier Tuesday, an evolutionist testified that dishonest and illogical writings' are the basis for the concept of creation science. Michael Ruse, a professor of philosophy at the University pi Guelph in Ontario, also said the teaching oi creation science is the thin edge of a very large wedge that could lead" to pressure against women, minorities and homosexuals. The lawsuit, filed May 27 for 12 clergymen and others, says the act is an attempt by religious fundamentalists to force their literal interpretation of the book of Genesis into the schools. Enacted in March, the law would take effect next fall. It says that if public schools teach evolution, they must also teach the creation theory authorized by the law, which calls the theory creation science. A similar statute enacted in Louisiana is also being challenged by the ACLU. Divine Creator Hoisted said the creation account allowed by the bill presupposes a creator and that the creation means a divine creator. He also said he would not introduce a bill that did not conform to his religious beliefs. Ruse was one of three other ACLU witnesses testifying Tuesday, each of whom said creation science is not scientific. Five ACLU witnesses who testified Monday said creation science is religious Demonstrates Evolution Brent Dalrymple of the U.S. Geological Survey said creationists try to date the age of the earth or to disprove evolutionist figures by using disproved assumptions or incorrect data. They have cited figures that even the originators of the figures have rejected, he said. G. Geneticist Francisco Ayala of the University of California at Davis said he had demonstrated the evolution in his laboratory with a two-yeexperiment going through 25 generations of fruit flies, such experiments also have been done by others, he said.
