Show 6 B The Salt Lake Tribune. Tuesday, December Gala honors performing arts greats 8, 1981 Ackerman and Winston: A real find Ackerman is from the John Fahey school of steel string guitar playing His style of open tuning sounds much like Fahey. In fact, technically speaking, Ackerman is every bit as good as John Fahey Ackerman played solo guitar for nearly an hour, interspersing his deeply reflective acoustic pieces with hits of dry humor. Pianist George Winston joined him on Search For The Turtle's Navel, Ackermans best piece of music that night. The two produced music that was meditative, thoughtful and extremely personal. The two were obviously playing as much for their enjoyment as for the audiences But I think both musicians were genuinely pleased to be so well received by the crowd In truth, I had never heard of either man before. Both were recommended highly by those in the know. I was not disappointed Winston took over for Ackerman after a short intermission. He delved immediatelv into the Vince Guaraldi tune Linus and Lucy. The uptempo childrens song was jazzy and colorful. The pianist handled Fats Wallers Harlem stride piano style in stride, performing Chase with reckless abandon Winston played four separate parts on the piece, revealing his prowess as a fluid technician as well as classy interpreter. Winston blew harmonica on the Irish tune Haste To The Wind, which was done to perfection, but the highlight of his set was the swirling soundscape he created with his piano on Carol of Elves. Both Ackerman and Winston record on the Windham Hill label, which Ackerman founded. The two are extremely talented in person so Im sure their albums would offer more of the same. By Tom McCarthey Tribune Staff Writer I spent a delightful evening at the Ladies Literary Club over the weekend listening to the cerebral sounds of William Ackerman and George Winston. The intimate hall had a holiday spirit to it. Christmas decorations gaily accented the inside of the Utah Historical site. A brightly lit tree sat off to one side of the stage All a listener needed was a cup of eggnog to top off the festive feeling U. bands plan concert Four University of Utah bands will present a joint concert Wednesday at 8 p.m. in Kingsbury Hall.
