Employees of the U.S. Postal Service from Ogden to Sandy to Provo are experimenting with a new defense weapon to ward off theirtraditional enemy dogs. The device is simple. Its a quick-:- . elease umbrella which if opened before the canines have the opportunity to attack, may prevent a potential victim from being confined to a desk job. Dogs are no joke to the mail carriers. During a dog prevention training session held at the Sandy Post 700 East, mailmen complained of Office, 9200 vicious attacks by dogs running freely in streets loose in yards. Can Refuse Delivery can refuse delivery, said Phillip C. Kemp, They safety director for the Postal Service in Sandy. We have one person whose legs are not usable because of a dog attack. He added that there is also a $200,000 lawsuit filed against owners of a dog in Ogden by a mailman who was attacked recently. People buying dogs dont want to keep them in, he said. If the public would just help by tying up their dogs away from the mailbox we would be able to provide better delivery. The group chuckled as Midvale Police Sergeant David Van Zile brought a police dog named Justice to the training session. Its a real live dog, said one mailman. You shouldnt bring real live dogs around mailmen. Staged Attack David Hislop, one of the braver of the group, agreed to stand in to stage an attack. He said he had been bitten twice, once hospitalized. Since then, he said, Ive been wise enough not to go near them. If its a German shepherd or a doberman, I wont even go in the yard. When Sergeant Van Zile arrived with a German shepherd police dog trained to attack, it was Mr. Hislop that let out a whimper. Ready, Dave? asked the sergeant. No, Dave replied quickly. But within seconds the dog was commanded to attack and David had no choice but to make use of his only defense, the umbrella. Animals will react so much like human beings, said Mr. Kemp. When protecting property, or persons, they will react like they are taught to. A dog will sense if a person is outwardly frightened and will react aggressively. When approaching a dog, if one tries to dodge the dog, he may also react aggressively, explained Sergeant Van Zile. He also noted that dogs will attack usually only when they are afraid. mm New officers for Wheeler Historic Farm include, from left, Susan Barber, Jane Dudley, Beverly Lucas, Ginny Black and Kay Jensen.
