The article could lead one to believe that the statement of a particular bishop should be taken as Roman Catholic doctrine. With all due respect to this fine bishop, just because he is the president of the U.S. Catholic Conference does not give him any exclusive authority in expounding Roman Catholic doctrine and he is probably not try-- . ing to do so. In fact he is probably teaching Roman Catholic doctrine and I am sure that his words contain much wisdom and should be seriously reflected upon. I believe that all Roman Catholics have a right to speak out on the issues of our day. However, the ultimate verification of any Roman Catholics ideas rests with the use of faith, tradition, and reason. If this results in doctrinal diffences, the final authority is only the Pope and his magisterium and not any other individual Roman Catholic or group of Roman Catholics. Conerning the matter at hand, it is quite clear to me, and I am speaking for myself alone, that the Pope and his magisterium have consistently upheld that abortion is 5 wrong. far as I can determine, abortion is murder, plain and simple. If I truly believe this, then I must vote for those candidates who oppose abortion at all levels so that this slaughter of innocent children will not con- Tribune Readers Opinions Ronald Reagan from being Although the alternatives are few and less than select, Walter Mondale has come out in public in favor of a bilateral nuclear freeze. This year some of the increased requirements for high school graduation will take effect in many of Utahs school districts. How industrial education will fare is still to be determined with several problems remaining. With increased course time needed for academic subjects, time for industrial education as an elective is likely to be drastically reduced. Many students in the past have taken some courses as electives. For instance, students heading for a college program in engi- - devoid of life. LIZABETH BRADBURY Its Cable TV Time Well, Utah, it is time once again to debate the cable TV issue, however, you do have a choice. You can cither vote for Initiative A and then pay out tax dollars for more litigation on this wornout and unconstitutional proposal or vote against and then not have cable TV in your private home if it offends you. As for your children coming to my house and being exposed to "pornography" keep your children in your home and there is no problem. Why should the state or myself have to guide your children in what they watch? Take some responsibility as parents and dont leave it for others to protect your children. ROBERT M. KELLEHER Kearns Prevent Nuclear War If one human being takes the life of another it is called murder. If a person takes the lives of many human beings, a culture, race or nation, it is called genocide. It is not called national defense and it is not culled technological progress. Wake up. 1 Thirty thousand U.S. nuclear bombs at present, a proposed Increase of 17,000 in the next 10 years, ar.d no relations to speak of with the Soviet Union are sure ways to accomplish this "genocide." One result of these changes may be a decline in enrollment in industrial education programs. Student may find their opportunity for exploring educational options very limited. DAVID K. KNIGHTON Reagan Should Retire cannot believe what I just read in The Tribune, Oct. 9, editorial page. I do not know who wrote the editorial titled "President Reagan 'Wins Debate by Displaying His Fitness, but whoever did write It certainly did not watch the same debate that I watched if they think President Reagan won" anything except first prize for being able to double talk his way through a debate without ever answering any questions. The writer was correct on a couple of things such as "He Mr. Reagan didn't do it by demonstrating superior wisdom or vision. The Mr. Reagan gained no credit for aggressiveness either." The writer obviously took a break or fell asleep or they wouldn't have written some-liiihlike A repeat performance by Ine in the concluding confrontation in Kansas City Oct. 21 will virtually seal the doom of Walter Mondale and the Democrats despite the challengers performance which, on pure debating merit, topped that of the sometimes hesitant president." How Sometimes hesitant? Come-on- ! about quivering lips, shaky voice and bad Jokes while repeatedly ignoring the questions and avoiding issues. Hesitant? Try forgetful and confused. Frankly, rather than giving a picture of "fitness" as the writer would like us to believe, what we saw was a man who, for his own sake and that of his country should retire, not on social security because he certainly doesnt believe in It, but since he doesn't need it, should just plain retire. He could then stop dying his hair, stop wearing hearing aids and stop requiring special built podiums with loud speakers so he can hear the questions. As for "sealing the doom of Mondale, " forget It' There are too many of us out here who know who won the debate! An increased number of dropouts seems a likely result of the new requirements. At the present time, this problem is serious, but as those students who find academic subjects incompatable with their abilities and interests increase, the dropout rate will take off. How may some of these problems be solved? There are some things that could be done to combat them. One possibility would be to classify industrial education as math or science or both. If it were to be so classified, it could then be part of the graduation requirements. However, several of the present industrial education programs in Utah would need to strengthen their present academic content. The state board of education andor local school districts would need to make this new classification Another alternative would be to give vocational education students a diploma that is a little different from the traditional one. This could then reduce the number of academic credits needed for graduation. DAVID R. DANIELS Media Lock Step It is inci edible that a two party system can exist in our county wherein the resources of the told media are directed against a Republican minority on a ratio of at least Your lead editorial "Delayed State Highway Work an Issue for '84 Election" (Oct. 24) is a case In point. Every word is true but you underhanded-lneglected to mention the key word: "Democrat." even once, and It is obvious from Tip O'Neill backwards, the Democrats have controlled the countrys purse strings for 50 years. The obviousness of your attack is to hope hut the uninformed will point their voting lispleasure against the Republicans. Readers should digest the drivel nine-to-on- y totjj - studied Second, most of the Sikhs in New Mexico and elsewhere in this country are probably not yet radicalized They are simply searching young Americans following Indian gurus But, according to Sikh rebel leader Jadjit Singh Chohan. there are others calling publicly for "suicide squads forming in Canada. Britain and the United States" to assassinate Indian diplomats and other Hindus Third, while the vast majority of the Sikhs want nothing to do with communism, there is already a concern and admission on the part of moderate Sikhs that thei e is communist agitation and infiltration on many levels. 3 It is not a new story, it is an old story as poignant and tragic as those of the old Indian legends. It is a saga of politicians and ambitious clergy losing hold of their followers, moving radically to hold them fast and, in the process, drowning in the tides they've created in India's human sea. I read with amazement the article entitled "No Brussels sprouts for us. please: 12. we re American" in The Tribune, O is caused becaus i canMy amazement not believe that an American living in Cambridge, England, could so abuse the trust and friendship which she has obviously received from her neighbors in that lovely and gracious town as to write home with such vindictiveness. Frankly, it was not even amusing and I am left wondering what the "real live English lady" who employed her as personal secretary would think (but probably not say) about such a tirade? On the reverse side of the coin, as an English widow making her first visit to the States, may I say that all the Americans I have met from the moment of touch-dowat Dallas Airport to the present time have been most delightful, helpful and friendly. My accent may sound odd but nobody has laughed, and I have watched with wonder as the great American way of life has unfolded for my pleasure. It is a joy to be here and I can assure my American cousins that my own account of my travels when I return home will be honest and true and always greatly in their favor. Is it too much to hope that Mrs. C'allen will mend her ways? And most importantly prevent ists who could not (they thought) be touched Guru Terath Singh Khalsa explained some of the background of the period when Sikh moderates were seeking diplomatic so, lutions "In as moderate Sikh leaders met with the central government to discuss the issues. Bhindranwale and his 200 followers would engage in violent acts The government broke off negotiations with the Sikhs even though the Sikh moderates wanted to continue the negotiations " Once again, the acts of fanatics were able to overwhelm and control the acts of moderates and thus destroy the center That ttiis is first exactly the pattern of social change the reaction of the tiadilional leaders and then the rise of the fanactics that one sees in many countries today is something to be was set and completed in federal court, and the other case is set to come to trial later on this year. Mrs. Farley and her campaign staff had no control over the matter, one way or another, and during a KUTV debate with Mr. Monson she stated she had no desire to discuss it. Neither of these court cases have indicated that Mr. Monson had done anything, but to me, at least, it shows a lack of good judgment on Mr. Monsons part to become involved at all, particularly if he was working for the state when these organizations were created, law or no law. As far as Dick Pettit's letter in the Forum, concerning a questionnaire sent out by the National Rifle Association, on which Mrs. Farley scored only an "F" and Mr. Monson an "A," it seems that her request for a two-da- y waiting period before issuance of a license, became the fly in the ointment and resulted in her low score. We'll never know for sure, but it might have stopped some of the deer hunters this and last week on Wasatch Boulevard from shooting within the county and city limits, at a location where last winter the deer had to fed and therefore the hunters considered the site a haven. It might even have curtailed some of the traveling butchers in vans, completely equipped for the poachers. It might even have stirred up the Legislature into increasing the $1,000 fine given if and when they are caught. FRANK R. KEYSER n Monson Might Cash In The recent revelations m the news media about David Monson's connections with shady characters and questionable dealings have failed to conclude the obvious. David Monson spent a great deal of time and effort while employed by the people of Utah as lieutenant governor attempting to cash in on his public position and title. If Mr. Monson were elected to Congress he would have even greater opportunities to capitalize his public position for his own benefit and gain. Can we really be sure he would represent us first or his own interests? WILLIAM H KING Start to Stem Evil Tide Recently I was shocked and offended to read, in a widely distributed publication, a revolting account of rape and brutal mass murder. The details were truly disgusting. It is not only cable telvision that is corrupting and evil influence in our society Filth in print is equally repulsive. Regulation of cable television is only a starting point in the battle to stem the evil tide of pornography which is invading every aspect or our lives. We must start by censoring cable television Then, eventually, we can deal with sex and violence and smut in other areas. Initiative A is not the final solution to the pr oblem. But it is a beginning. And it will send a message to the world at large. It will make a statement about our moral values.
