D Richards Kit Becomes President President dent of the Council of Apo Apostles Sait Salt rJ Lake ke City Sept 14 At H.-At At a special meeting of the council of apostles held heldi i in this this city yesterday esterday Lorenzo Snow vas was chosen president of the Church of Jesus lS Christ Chiist o of Latter day Saints I Since the death of President Wilford Woodruff there has been a geat de deal l of speculation as to the up make of the next presidency of the ch church although though it t was was all along conceded that following following follow fonow ing precedent Lorenzo Snow as pr president president si- si dent of the coun council il of apostles would succeed to the presidency of the church the only question being eing as ohis to his willingness willingness willingness will will- to accept the responsibilities of the the office e on account of his his his' advanced age 84 years years However very soon after President Woodruffs Woodruff's death the apostles in accordance accordance accordance ac ac- ac- ac I with the rules of the church m met t the presidency pi existing was dissolved and the apostles with i Lorenzo Snow as president succeeded succeeded i to that office The question of reorganising reorganizing reo the presidency was then considered con con- ed and yesterday this was effected Lorenzo Snow being chosen as aEi successor successor successor sor to to Wilford Woodruff Woodruff This was done by unanimous vote vot as is required by the rules lules of the church President Snow then announced that he had chosen hosen Geoge George Q Cannon a as his first counselor and Joseph F. F Smith as second this action being ratified by unanimous vote The reorganization of the presidency left a very important office vacant that of president of f the apostles and Franklin D. F Smith as his second counselor President Snow was then sustained as tr in trustee for forthe the church The council also sustained Franklin D D. R Snow author of the hymn 0 My I ather Father was President Snow joined the chu church ch in 1836 being b baptized in June of that year by Apostle John F. Woodruff During the deliberations deliberations deliberations de de- de- de liberations the necessity of appointing a trustee trust for the church became became became be be- came apparent in order that its business business business busi busi- ness might properly be transacted and while thus thus' deliberating several of the brethren expressed themselves to the effect that the present was a most opportune time to organize the 1 first presidency and so unanimous was this sentiment that a motion was made to that effect and carried Lorenzo Snow I was then nominated and sustained as president of the Church of Jesus Christ Christof of Latter-day Latter Saints with the privilege of choosing his counselors President I. I Snow then selected with the approval of the council George Q Cannon as when an effort was first made to bring about a a. bet better under understanding i between the people vas was almost a memorable occasion and tied is rem remembered by all This occurred in May George Q Cannon the first counselor counselor coun m has be been n prominent before re the people so long that all allare are familiar with hi his career lIe He was vas born at Liverpool Liverpool Liv Liv- l England on January 11 1827 he became an apostle on August Au 26 1860 He fill filled d many many missions the most nota notable l being that to Hawaii On October 10 1880 he was chosen by John Taylor as first first counselor and retained by President Woodruff Mr Cannon has been prominent ent i in political political political cal and business affairs as well as church work He is one of the leading spirits in the Union Electric company and various other enterprises Joseph F. F Smith a nephew of Joseph Smith was born at Far West Vest Mo 10 in 1838 and became an apostle postle in 1867 President Taylor selected him as his second counselor in 1880 and he continued continued continued con con- in that office when President Woodruff became the head of the church The organization o 0 f the first presidency presidency presidency dency leaves a vacancy in the council of apostles there being but eleven members who stand in the following order F.
