Thousands ands upon thousands of people gathered gathered gath gath- ered in the city yesterday to pay pay the thelast thelast thelast last tribute to their honored churchman churchman churchman church church- man and beloved leader the late President President Pres Pres- ident iden t Wilford W Woodruff the fourth president of the church of Jesus Christ Christof of the Latter-day Latter Saints fully were in j the tabernacle while the streets and sidewalks side were lined with thousands more who with uncovered heads and saddened hearts watched the f funeral cortege move move toward the city bf the dead where in a bed of oI flowers the casket containing the remains passed from view The sc services vices at the tabernacle were simple just as the late president president vou would d dhave have desired The music was beautiful beautiful ful the songs inspiring The edifice looked strangely beautiful in its garb of mourning and the occasion was one oneto oneto oneto to indelibly impress itself upon the memory The weather was cool but even then the air at times was was' stifling and the flutter of fans beat a monotone accompaniment accompaniment accompaniment to tho the speakers But there were thousands more who never were able abl to get inside the huge building They stood outside in reverent silence w waiting waiting many many of them for them for hours until the ceremonies within should be beat beat beat at an end that they might catch a glimpse of the casket containing the earthly temple of their loved brother In the meantime tearful fa farewell rewell services had been enacted at the home of the late president The family of the deceased and authorities of the church gathered at the Woodruff villa early in the morning The plain white casket was lifted by gentle gentie hands into the white hearse and the last lat farewell was breathed by the stricken grief-stricken family At the cortege began to move and the temple block was reached a few v moments after 10 The pall-bearers pall Dr L L. W W. Snow Dr H. H W. W Snow Wilford S. S Woodruff James Woodruff jr George Scholes and William Woodruff Beatie Beanie then carried the casket with its sacred contents into the building the tho audience rising risingen en masse during the proceeding and placed it on onan an inclined dais in front of the stands The family of the departed the authorities of the church and th the apostles followed the former taking seats assigned them hem in the front tiers tiel's near the casket while the church dignitaries dignitaries dignitaries dig dig- occupied d the stands The scene that greeted the eye on the interior at this time was impressive in inthe inthe inthe the extreme The rear end of building was a mass of white relieved only by the magnificent floral de decorations decorations decora decora- cora and the stars and stripes which covered a large lage portion of the organ and served as a background for the themore themore themore more quiet effect in front The communion communion communion com com- munion table and the seats behind rising tier tiel above tier were covered with white china crepe caught in graceful folds by white silken tassels Each side of the organ was also clad in snowy robes Across the center of it was suspended the legend in electric lights Being Dead Yet while underneath this was a size life painting of the dead president the lineaments lineaments lineaments lin lin- of his face so like life-like as tobe to tobe tobe be almost startling Surrounding the portrait which was the work vork of Artist Will Clawson and on both sid sides s were i sheaves of grain sagebrush emblematic emblematic emblematic emblem emblem- of Utah as the pioneers around it and its present state of cultivated advancement On each side of the organ organ or or- gan the figures 18 1817 stood out in bold relief The table was particularly beautiful to behold under its load of floral tributes tributes tributes trib trib- utes from flom friends and relatives I It was 1035 when the peals of the huge organ began to reverb reverberate rate through the auditor m Professor Daynes rendering a funeral march corn com composed posed by him especially for the occa occa- sion Some of the remaining church officials came in at nt this point and took seats on the stands which contained the following Counselors to the late President Wilford Woodruff George Q C Cannon and Joseph F F. D Richards then offered a pray prayer r asking Gods God's blessing on the heads of President Lorenzo Snow the successor of President Woodruff Woodruff Woodruff Wood Wood- ruff and especially on the family who had been bereft of their father George D. D assisted by the tabernacle tabernacle tabernacle tab tab- choir then sang very fully When shall I regain Thy presence And again behold Thy face facet In Thy holy habitation Did my spirit once reside In my first primeval childhood Was Vas I nurtured near Thy side O 0 my Father Thou that In tho the high and glorious place President Joseph F. F Smith was the first speaker He characterized it as superfluous for him to attempt to relate relate relate re re- re- re late the historical events which had entered the life of President Woodruff Wood Wood- ruff He also said it would be unnecessary unnecessary unnecessary sary for him to to attempt to eulogize the character and labors of him who had gone to meet his reward for the reason that the people were all acquainted acquainted acquainted ac ac- ac- ac with it President Woodruff Woodruff Woodruff Wood Wood- ruff was the fourth in succession who had occupied the exalted position of president prophet seer rand and revelator iu the church It was the speakers privilege when a II child he said to witness the funeral services over the remains of the first president Joseph Smith and to know him as a a child may know a man He was absent in England on a mission at the death of President Young and was unable to attend the services of John Taylor But was glad to be present on this occasion and to have the privilege of mingling his words and tears with those of his over one of the late presidents who whose e labors had been so blessed to the people of God President Smith spoke of the beautiful beautiful ful life of the late president and hoped that all others might follow the he path marked out by the beloved leader I He prayed for the blessings of God upon the bereaved family that they might follow the life work of their leader The Beautiful City was then sung by Mrs Maggie C. C Hull Dull the choir in the chorus President Lorenzo Snow was the next speaker He lie was delighted to see so many people assembled to do honor to the president ent He lIe had been intimately acquainted with the deceased president president c dent ent for two sixty-two years and he could testify that the life of the great leader had bee been a most perfect one He paid a glowing tribute to the worth of President President Pres Pres- ident iden t Woodruff and of the good he ha had l done during his long life of usefulness Speaking in regard to the vacancy in inthe inthe inthe the presidency caused by the death of President Woodruff he said the gospel in its completeness made provision for these changes and that th the work would roll ron on uninterruptedly as it ha had done in the past Apostle Franklin D. D Richards said that so far as one man could enter into the feelings of another he felt to to adopt as his own the words of his brethren regarding the greatness and I goodness of our late president He had bad been a great exemplar of the work in which he had been engaged in his implicit obedience to the dictates of the spirit This had been one of the great features of his life Another had been the keeping of a dairy of his actions actions actions ac ac- ac- ac and the history of the church m 6 f Ji J i f 1 of k v J r r 1 from his first co- co connection with it to the day before his death which would be most valuable as a compendium of the progress of 01 the work Elder Richards urged the elders to follow the example of President Woodruff in this regard President George Q Cannon ma made e quite a 0 lengthy address paying a 0 high tribute to the man with whom he had been so closely associated for years as counselor We Wo shall ever miss him said the speaker His family y will always miss him for he was an honored husband and father President Cannon felt that too much could not be said in praise of 01 President W Woodruff President Cannon referred to the last days of President Woodruff on the earth Ho lIe was pleasant and cheerful to the end With the tho speaker he attended attended at at- tended a banquet given by tha the Bohemian Bohemian Bohemian Bohem Bohem- ian club of San Francisco to one of its members At it he was asked aske l to speak and did so This was on Saturday the in st st. On Sunday he attended attendee meeting in San Francisco and Monday went out riding Tuesday and Wednesday Wednesday Wednesday Wed Wed- he spent writing and andon on Thursday Thursday Thursday Thurs Thurs- day the fatal attack came on which ended in his death on Friday morning His end was calm and peaceful He passed away as one sleeping Referring to the death of President Woodruff away from home President Cannon stated that it was his desire to togo togo togo go away He was so concerned in the speakers speaker's health that he thought such an outing was necessary He himself himsel had been previously in going to the sea coast and it was his desire to accompany President Cannon on this occasion His Ilis passing away though quite unexpected was a gradual sinking sinking sink sink- ing in into to an eternal sleep Concluding President Cannon invoked invoked invoked in in- the blessings of God upon the twelve apostles and upon all who held responsible positions in the church that their lives might be fraught with good deeds and noble examples such as those characterizing the life and labors of President Wilford Woodruff The choir then sang sang President President Woodruffs Woodruff's Woodruffs Woodruff's Woodruffs Woodruff's Wood Wood- ruffs ruff's favorite hymn God Moves in a a Mysterious Way Apostle Brigham Young offered the closing prayer after which the concourse concourse concourse con con- course of people began to file out into the grounds and take up the march to the cemetery The services at an end the pallbearers ers stepped forward and while Professor sor Daynes played a funeral dirge carried the casket to the hearse waiting wait waiting waiting ing on the north side of the building Carriages reserved d for the family and relatives were scattered through the grounds and came up Vp to take on their load loael and form in the procession Ropes Rope had been stretched to keep the walks walls on the north side of the building clear and without hindrance the cortege began began began be be- gan to wind its way out through the grounds and up Brigham street The city cemetery teemed with a multitude numbering several thousands thousands thousands ands as the f cortege reached the gates The grave had been decorated Around the sides it was covered with a tapestry of flowers containing con con- containing the following varieties Dahlias Dahlias Dahlias Dah Dah- lias geraniums roses asters maiden I ferns petunias sweet der der- I der-I binos and the whole permeating the air with fragrance fragrance fra fra- fra grance rance and suggesting a soft place of rest for him whose life had ended The casket was taken talen to the grave and while the tears of loved ones fell to mingle with the earth that soon was to hide it from view tender hands lowered lowered lowered low low- ered it into its receptacle The Harmony Harmony Har Har- mony Glee club sang Not Dead But Bui At the head of the grave stood three of deceased's wives and surrounding surround it stood his children grandchildren and the officials of the c church As the c coffin was placed in position relatives and friends stepped forward and dropped posies and sprigs of evergreens into the grave Then the earth swallowed it and soon nothing but a mound covered with flowers remained to mark the che sleeping place of the dead president Apostle Lyman offered the dedicatory prayer asking that grace and strength be given those who were bereaved that they might bear up und under r the burden He lIe prayed that President Woodruffs Woodruff's life and work vork might stand as an example example exam exam- pIe to the hosts of Israel throughout the world and further that th the widows and children of the deceased might be comforted in the knowledge that their father had gone to a glorious reward He asked the Almighty to bless the tho ground where so 60 many loved ones had been laid awa away that it might ever be sacred and holy to the people At the conclusion of the prayer the thelast thelast thelast last floral tributes were laid upon the grave and the multitude began to move toward the ci city ty President t Wilford Wilford Wilford Wil Wil- ford Woodruff had been conducted to his final place of rest 0 |
