Show SCIENCE Presidents Reagan and Andropov: My 4 year old asked me. "Mommy, who scm all these wars?" And I had to tell him who: our leaders, men old enough to know better, men we are supposed to trust our welfare to. Stupid, stupid men... We have the means and the technology for every person to live comfortably and well fed on this planet. The means to bring this about is not aggressive grabbing of small countries from each other in an effort to gain "strength." but the cooperation of our technologists and research to make each other complete . . . Please undo this madness. What is wrong with the United States and Soviet Union sitting down and saying. "1 need this for my people. How can you help me get it? How can 1 help you?". . . I am sending you a picture of my children . . . Surely you do not think of yourselves as the murderers of small children. But that you are. if you cannot halt this nuclear madness. Barbara J. Groth. Chicago. HI. To To I ON PARADE President Reagan: dont want to die. What To will it prove if I do? I dont want to kill Russians or anyone else ... If you w ant to leave any mark in history, wouldnt it be better to have people say that you helped in nor causing a devastating war than saying you helped cause one? ... It seems like some of the money being spent learning how to destroy lives could be better spent learning how to save some. Kirby Randolph, Hampton. Va. To President Andropov: Sir. I have a beautiful little boy that is 4 years old. He is so full of life. He says he's going to play football, tells me all the things he is going to do when he gets big. Sometimes when he tells me that, it tears at my heart to know that he and all of the innocent children might never have the chance to grow up . . . Hes so sweet and innocent, how do I tell him this? 1 can't! . . . Mrs. Terry ONeal. Newhope, Ark. President Reagan: Now I am part of the system that 1 was going to transform. I believe that 1 speak for so many of my generation, and the generations before us, when I say that we have lost hope for the future of our world. Mary Loughlin, Auburn, Mass. To President Reagan: Neither side trusts the other, hostility is apparent daily in the news, yet barely 40 years ago we were allied in an effort to defeat Nazi Germanys drive for world domination, the very thing we accuse each other of now. We common people are at your mercy. We just want to live our lives as best we can . . . Ordinary people want simply to be members of the family of man, citizens of the world ... If war comes, it wont be because it was inevitable, but because the leaders of the world made it happen. It will be your failure. Herbert Piper, W. St. Paul, Minn. Presidents Reagan and Andropov: What a way to bring about peaceful coexistence. Am 1 scared? I am more scared than I was during combat in World War II. Korea and Viet Nam combined. From Dantes Inferno "into the eternal darkness, into fire, into ice." WHAT A LEGACY! Clifton IV. Hastings. Mason, N.H. To Turn the blues and blahs into ooohs and ahhhs! President Reagan: Since I cannot comprehend the notion that people will be wiped out, I have to think of the matter in more personal terms. I think about my son and daughter, about whether they might die before they can establish their own careers and families, and about the possibility that there will be no more members of my family . . . ever. Arthur F. Lindberg, Tucson, Ari:. To President Reagan: So this is a plea on the personal level. I hope enough people still have enough faith to take the time to try and once more tell you, who represents our government, we are sick of being sick with fear and distrust of our fellow man. You can debate how much more death to manufacture until the one fool it takes pushes the one button that will make all the talk senseless ... We dont need a leader to make us stronger we need a leader who can help us and the world survive.' Mrs. K. Sattman SEPTEMBER 30, 1984 PARADE MAGAZINE |
