Just as theres an (good theater for newer actors and actresses), theres also a whole list of Avenue addresses housing show and sewing rooms of newer or more independent designers. Yonson Paks gray and white showroom is well away from Seventh Avenue in an old building with a new name, Designers Building. The building contrasts sharply with those on Seventh Avenue. Instead of - the best way I could communicate with people and also enrich their existence. Within two years of her familys arrival in this country, Yonson Paks career was on its way. In high school, she designed and made a tiny collection of separates that she took to Henri Bendel and other shops and promptly sold. She continued to produce and sell her designs for four years of design training at Pratt Institute in New York. The designs were made up by neighborhood seamstresses she trained. Senior at Pratt She founded Y. Pak Ltd. while a senior at Pratt in 1978. The majority of her separate designs is for daytime wearing. The pieces In a particular group are interchangeable. She uses imported natural fabrics from Italy and France and believes in offering fabric weights that are seasonless. She sees cotton, for instance, as a d fabric. Her clothing has a smooth swing. Her pants offer interesting shapes and lengths, distinctive but not kooky. She likes asymmetrical hemlines (sometimes three lengths overlapping in one skirt). Three design treatments have become her signature. One is her mixture of fabrics in the same garment. Another is her way of reversing a fabric in one gare ment to give the clothing a and textured look. The third is her V signature consistently turning up on a collar or on the sleeve covering the top of a hand. She believes in soft colorings and gentle tonalities. She dislikes flashy two-wee- New York. The trip to her showroom and the chance to see and talk to her offered closer inspection of her 125-pie- collection, her largest to date. She was born in Seoul, Korea, the middle child of five in a wealthy family that emigrated to the United States when she was 16. Although there were few career options for women in her childhood, the designer explained that she had dreamed of a creative and independent future. Almost Shy Way She seemed iji a quiet, almost shy way. She speaks English, sometimes with difficulty, in a voice so quiet and a manner so shy, attentive listening is required. Her clothes represent her philoso- mid-thig- midi. She also offered a Pak version of the ski pant seen in several collections. If unsure of what ski pants look like, they are skinny, stretch pants a la the 1950s. Her first venture llito designing dress evening wear is a multi-levfeaturing a combination of dotted net, knit and sheer, black wool. Wear the dress ankle length or short by removing the bottom. Another option is wearing the short version over flared pants. year-roun- phy. Highlights for Fall Highlights of her fall collection include three-piec- e outfits that relate through one fabric. Other highlights are the Pak uniform, an assortment of tops and bottoms related by the use of a single fabric, wool sateen or polished powder blue worsted, and Puzzles, a group of clothes in jigsaw blocks of color and .shapes. Coats that coordinate with her designs are .in varied lengths. She offers a golf jacket, a double-breaste-d cadet topper with full sleeves, a seasonless wool zippered stadium jacket and a car coat.
