Show The Public F oriun The Salt Lake Tribune ernor Explains Firing one income or on two, on welfare or not, she is in a difficult and frustrating situation. What has happened to force women to become wage earners while the children are taken care of by free programs? I am aware of the stones in the press speculating on the reasons for the dismissal uf Doug Day as director of the Division of Wildlife Resources by his supervisor, Temple Reynolds, executive director of the Department of Natural Resources. 1 was consulted prior to this action by Mr. Reynolds and concurred in it as being entirely and properly within the scope of his responsibilities as director to insure the orderly and effective operation of the division within the department. There has been a and serious disagreement between Mr. Day and Mr. Reynolds over the management of the Division of Wildlife Resources and the coordination of administrative and budgeting activities of the division with the other agencies of the department. Coordination and, if necessary, integration of programs within a department are essential if there is to be any coherence and consistency in overall state policy development. This is especially critical in a department such as Natural Resources where the many uses of land and water must be reconciled in the public interest. Our wildlife are an essential and integral part of the public interest. 1 remain committed to their appropriate management and development. It is time now to cease the unproductive and divisive debate that has surrounded this issue, and to get on with the business of preserving and enhancing our states wildlife resources. I have every confidence that the new acting director and his staff, the Department of Natural Resources, the Wildlife Board and the Board of Big Game Control are prepared to meet those challenges. For many years, Congress has been "stimulating the economy with all sorts of "free" grants, programs, studies, projects, subsidies and entitlements. Congress has done this by Increasing taxes and by borrowing more than a trillion dollars of national debt. As prices get higher, more and more free programs are asked for, the debt and prices get higher and higher, and we cant keep up! g If President Reagan and some congressmen talk about being responsible by cutting the spending, they are accused of "hurting the women and children and the poor. Now we are all being conned by talk of cutting the deficit. This is only doubletalk. Uncontrolled spending hurts women and children and the poor! The blame lies on those who make promises and give gifts irresponsibly. There are many places which Congress can cut, but it is too afraid of powerful interests that enjoy receiving federally borrowed money. If citizens were more responsible on the local level and as individuals, it would not be necessary to send so much money through the sieve of federal programs. Women dont like to be used. Women want and need honorable men and an honest economy, not one of false fronts built on the borrowed riches of big government. reo-surc- KAY THORESON Orem Al, Op en Your Mind SCOTT M. In the meantime, several developers have approached the owner with proposals for renovation of the Eagle Gate. The committee has been aware of, and encouraged attempts to schedule a meeting to examine these proposals. The committee has commended the owners willingness to restore the Eagle Gate and has repeatedly scheduled special meetings to expedite the handling of the case. Neither the owner nor the committee have questioned each others good faith. It would be helpful if all interested parties could follow this precedent. HENRY 0. We keep hearing about the "gender gap and we hear that the Democrats are betting that women voters will blame President Reagan for their problems. Hart beat Mondale in Ohio and Indiana, two of the grittiest smokestack states, while losing Maryland and North Carolina. That was doubly bad news for Mondale. It meant Hart will haunt him all the way to the July 0 convention floor. And it damaged Fritzs image as the Democrat who could beat Ronald Reagan. We stuck a dagger into Mondales inevitability, said Hart manager Pudge Henkel. You could tell Hart had pulled off a survival act. The top floor of the National Press Club here was a Yuppie festival.
