Seeks Ban on Exit Poll Until All Voting Ends Nationwide Prospective students and their parents from Utah states visited Westminster College of Salt Lake City Friday for the schools Campus Preview Day program. The event concluded the college's campus preview activities for the 1983-8- 4 year. Guests gathered in the Manford A. Shaw Center for welcoming remarks and orientation at 8.15 a.m., before beginning a full day of events at the campus. We have had an outstanding response to our campus preview program throughout the school year, said Jane Townsend, director of admissions. These one-da- y programs have provided excellent opportunities for prospective students and their parents to get to know Westminster and learn more about college life in general. and neighboring i Stuart By ; , ; n In addition to proposing that broadcasters not reveal exit poll results until the polls are closed everywhere, Fraiberg also is campaignnational election ing for a day that would begin at the same time everywhere, from Maine to Hawaii. All polls would open and close at the same moment. These proposals deserve at least the courtesy of a reply from- ail the networks. Newspapers Television Stations W Group D. Bykofsky r Knight-Ridde- Group President Lawrence Fraiberg has no intention of letting die his campaign to get broadcasters to ,quit using exit poll results before all the polls are closed. Last month, he announced that Group Ws TV and radio stations ' would abstain from releasing exit poll predictions before the polls were closed. He invited other broadcasters to follow suit. An NBC official will meet with Fraiberg soon to discuss his ideas, but all Fraibergs heard from ABC and CBS have been the sounds of si' lence. I intend to stay with it," Fraiberg ; said. This will not be one of these Issues where you give a speech on j)ne topic one day and then go on to sotnethlng else. Took on Toughest NBC seems to have a (mark for launching news shows that do poorly in the ratings, but die with exit lines worthy of being mentioned in the same breath with Nathan Hale's I regret I have but one life to give for my country. Lloyd Dobyns, in saying farewell at the end of last, Sundays First Camera, noted his show took on the biggest kid on the block, referring to CBSs 60 Minutes. That it did not work out exactly as planned goes without saying. For whatever reason, we simply did not attract enough viewers. Our ratings were not going up. A couple of weeks ago the company announced that we were through. The next Sunday our ratings went up. Competition Disadvantage Group Ws decision to hold back on exit poll results puts the company I'Hl a competitive disadvantage, but j fraiberg believes reform is necessary to maintain the integrity of the election process. An unspoken concern is that if the 'American public feels that TV cov-- n wage is unduly influencing the process by jumping the gun and discouraging some people from vot- ing, Congress may write laws to re strain broadcasters. is safer than a congressional mandate, which would raise troublesome constitutional issues. elec-""tio- Westminster College Holds Preview Day ,4 ' utes, which was the show Dobyns wanted to face. It reminds me of the adage that there are only two things in life that will make you miserable: The first is not getting what you want. The second is getting what you want. "First Camera" was a good show, bpt it gave loyal 60 Minutes" viewers absolutely no reason to abandon their favorite. I cant imagine why Dobyns thought the results would be any different. (First Camera was not seen in the Utah area.) Where will it all end? Five years ago, no one had ever heard of a rock video, now they can be seen on and cable TV, they have their own awards and can cost as much as a real movie did a few years back. Hd Uql.,. Inc Wor'fl Activities included tours and classes, financial aid and scholarship workshops, and career planning sessions. A special workshop for transfer students and a student panel of current Westminster students was also presented.
