Show Distinct performances highlight Giselle By Helen Forsherg Tribune Staff V,., er Following an artistically and commercially successful run at the Capitol Theatre, Ballet West takes its new production of Giselle to the Browning Center at Weber State College in Ogden this weekend. The new production is handsome and refined as restaged by Denise Schultze and Louis Godfrey, Ballet Wests ballet mistress and master, notable interpretation as Hilarion, the young man determined to pursue Giselle. He gives flair and dash to this character, and thus places importance on an often overlooked part of the story. Born Excells As Albrecht, Bum like opening Bruce nights Caldwell, excells. Dancing with three of the four he is the consummate partner. His strength and elevation have improved markedly as he whips through his bravura variations with more ease than previously displayed. His dramatic ability, until now, has been inconsistent But as Albrecht he achieves a fine balance: He is appropriately arrogant, attentive, remorseful and in the end, with grief. Stacey Swaner, Ballet Wests most technically proficient ballerina, is at ease as Giselle, a role she has danced several times in previous years, and one in which she continues to grow. As the peasant Giselle, Swaner is convincing in her girlish flirtatiousness, giving her courtship with the count every sweet and endearing detail. When deceived in love, she is a sadly vulnerable Giselle, transposed d into a spirit girl who illuminates the stage with lightness and virtuoso dancing. Leticia Hernandez is, to say the least, an immensely interesting Gi Dance review and made more distinct by exceptional performances from company members. Especially notewothy are the four interpretations of Giselle, the role which has challenged many atdancer since its debut in Paris in h the century. Though it would be difficult to dramatically surpass the arresting opening night performance of pri-m- a ballerina Lee Provancha Day, who captured the emotional essence of this complex role, each of the ballerinas offered a valid and personal characterization, reflective of their growing levels of maturity. This new Giselle finds many of Ballet Wests principals, soloists and corps members dancing beyond any previous performances. Malcolm Burn, currently a guest artist with the company, comes forward with a xnid-19t- sure-foote- selle There is nothing peasantish or childish about this beauty; therefore no matter how long-limbe- d hard she tries, Hernandezs peasant Giselle has the sophisticated appeal of Albrechts fiance, Bathilde, whom she portrays in alternating performances. This elegance however is an asset to the Giselle presented in Act H. Hernandez movements are willowy and sustained, suggesting a tender longing for Albrecht She also gives her character a sensuousness which heightens the ballets romance and drama. Effective Mad Scene Odette Millner, the only dancer of status to portray Giselle, offers a first act more distinguished in dramatic interpretation than in Act IL She is an exuberant, bright-eye- d peasant girl, infusing the village people with her cheer. Millners mad scene is especially effective because of the sharp contrast in moods from one of frivolity to one of unmistakable pathos. Her spirit Giselle is one locked in austerity, a quality she may have transferred from her portrayal of Myrtha, Queen of the Wilis, to Giselle. As the queen, Millner is stuncool, calculating, a forceful ning al tJONf fRlDAy A The Salt Lake Trlbnne presense as she leads the corps ot Wilis in the mysterious dance of the night But this coolness overpowers her interpretation of Giselle, ' as Millner falls to evoke deep passion for Albrecht Affinity for Myrtha Also showing an affinity for Myrtha is Suzanne Wagner, who as one of Ballet Wests most visible corps members, has been cast in several principal parts since joining the company. However, her broad and forceful dancing could use a touch more levity in this role. The striking peasant pas de deux is a highlight of the first act with stylish dancing by Webster Dean, Martin Leuthauser, Matthew Deg-naLisa LaManna, Shari Nagley-GomeGayle Abbott and Maureen Laird in alternating casts. Also offering secure performances are Susan Keen, Jennifer King and Mary Ann Lind in the second act roles of Zulma and Moyna. The Utah Symphony, under the direction of Varujan Kojian, offers a particularly sensitive rendition of the Adolphe Adam score. Performances are scheduled Friday (Stacey Swaner and Malcolm Burn) and Saturday (Lee Provancha 1984 M9 n, z, Day) at 8 p.m. Tribune Staff Pnofo by Lynn R. jonneon Brace Caldwell portrays Albrecht in Ballet West's prodac-o- f 'Giselle, which plays Friday and Saturday in Ogden.
