Show S, r . . Utahs Resorts Eye Another Big Skiing Season !& SI By Craig Hansell Tribune Sports Writer Utah Ski season became o. icial Sunday when Brighton opened its Majestic lift. A heavy snowfall added to the mood of the occasion as skiers made their first halting attempts at regaining the polished skiing form they enjoyed at the end of last season. Last years crowds enjoyed a record snowpack and this season, although only considered average for its starting date, is also expected to provide an abundance of slope time s rates for skiers. This years range from a low of $8 at Nordic Valley to Deer Valley which will cost $25 for a full day of skiing. A look at each resort follows: 0 Alta, $10 day pass, One of Americas foot elevation oldest ski resorts, celebrating its 43nd anniversary, opened Monday for the season. Alta has eight double chair lifts, 11 snowcats and a new ski school-tickoffice located near the base of the Albion lift which is expected to be finished in December. Alta is the culmination of a dream established when 10 businessmen, led by the late Salt Lake attorney Joe Quinney, who died this week, gathered $10,000 to construct Utahs first ski lift. The dream of the Salt Lake Winter Sports Association group provided a marked change from the old mining town of the 1800s where there were six saloons and frequent murders. George Watson, who is refered to as Mayor Watson because of his early Involvement in the areas evolution from mining to skiing, was instrumental in the process which took much of the areas land out of gait Sake By Thanksgiving Park City will have six lifts and the gondola in operation and there will be skiing to the bottom of the mountain. We will be opening as many runs as possible for Thanksgiving, commented Ms. Beck. Park City opened on Nov. 17th last season. 0 foot eleParkWest, $16, ParkWest plans to open its vation seven lifts and show off its renovated day lodge when it starts the season Dec. 9. Last year, 70,000 skier days were logged at Powder Mountain and, according to manager Brad Williams, two major condo projects are expected to be completed by Feb. 1. ' 0 foot elSnowbasin, $14, Pete Siebert expects to evation open Friday. While this is not Utahs ski resort, it oldest continuously-ru- n is one of the first to be planned in the state. Alta's Alf Engen laid out the first resort in 1934, according to Snowbasin information, and last year this resort in Ogden Canyon attracted about 105,000 skier days. 6,890-9,00- Recreation day-pas- Thursday Morning November 24, 1983 8,500-10,55- Page 8 Section F Brightons Gil Jensen said skiers should notice an improvement. It was 1946 when Otto Carpenter and Bob Burns combined forces to establish Snow Park, Park City's first ski resort, in what is now Deer Valleys Snow Park Lodge area.
