Show Interests Growing Churches For Metaphysical Churches in Utah By Melinda Sowerby Tribune Church Editor In 1917 the International New Thought Alliance was incorporated to unify all churches, centers and schools in the New Thought field in a spiritual framework that provides for and encourages full freedom of expression and function. Sixty-si- x years later, there are three churches in the Salt Lake area which are members of INTA, including the Church of Religious Science, Unity of Salt Lake and Lifecraft Ministry, the newest of the three. Lifecrafts minister, the Rev. Deborah Thornton, was recently chosen to serve as INTAs district president in Utah. INTA is not affiliated with the Utah New Thought Allliance, Rev. Thornton said, adding many people involved in New Thought religions in Utah do not know INTA exists. Id like to make people aware of INTA, Rev. Thornton said. Shed also like to make the general public more aware of New According to a INTA publication , churches, schools and centers affiliated with teach people to come into a conscious realization of the divinity within , and of the unity of God and man ... so we can say , 7 and INTA that Father are Thought churches in the area, be- cause she believes the interest is growing in the metaphysical churches. Conscious Realization According to a INTA publication, churches, schools and centers affiliated with INTA teach people to come into a conscious realization of the divinity within, and of the unity of God and man ... so we can say, I and the Father are one. INTA affirms the freedom of each person in matters of belief. They also affirm the Kingdom of Heaven is within us, that we are one with the Father, that we should love one another and return good and evil. The INTA publication also explains the sick should be healed through prayer and that we should endeavor to manifest perfection . . . we affirm that our mental states are carried forward into manifestation and become our experience through the creative law of Cause and Jesus Galilee Home Uncovered? Body of God afAnd participating churches firm that the universe is the body of God, spiritual in essence, governed by God through laws that are spiritual in reality even when material in appearance. INTA supports and encourages new centers and encourages independent churches, such as Lifecraft, Rev. Thornton said, adding the Rev. Blaine C. Mays, president of INTA, has been particularly encouraging to her and her ministry. Lifecraft, now just over a year old, is now holding services in the Rodeway Inn, 280 W. 7200 South, in Midvale. Called Sunday Enrichment, the services are informal, Rev. Thornton said. Those services include an address by Rev. Thornton, a meditation period and a group discussion. Interested persons need not give up their current religious beliefs to join Rev. Thorntons group. Lifecraft holds the same principles as other INTA centers, including the belief that God and man are one. Lifecraft teaches healing of the sick through prayer and meditation and that mans mental state is reflected in his experience, therefore man has control over his experience. In addition, Lifecraft teaches the universe is governed by God through spiritual laws, and Rev. Thornton uses the Bible and and Scientific Christian Mental Practices, by Emma Curtis Hopkins. Rev. Thorntons goal is to give participants the tools to make metaphysical principles work' in daily life. She believes her relaxed style leaves more room for flexibility and the questions and answers help participants to understand. She believes understanding is the key to using what youve learned, she said. As district president of INTA, Rev. Thornton hopes to see a greater participation by local New Thought churches in INTA activities, pointing out that through INTA, Salt Lake City can have the benefit of a number of excellent speakers on metaphysics. She spoke of the upcoming annual INTA Congress, being held this year July 31 through Aug. 5 in Phoenix, Ariz. She said the congress will feature futurologist Barbara Hubbard and actress Anne Francis as guest speakers. Further information on INTA, the congress or on Lifecraft Ministry can be obtained by calling Rev. Thornton. Her number can be obtained through information by asking for L Alan Thornton. Strange of the University cf South Florida. As determined so far, it was a reN y atively large but plain structure of about 75 by 100 feet, with a rough floor of unevenly placed stones and thatched roof of mixed mud and straw on beams. Scripture implies that the house where Jesus lived was that of the fisherman apostle Peter and his family. Fishhooks were found on the site, but arent regarded evidence. What led to the conclusions, the authors relate, were excavations of church above the an octagon-shape- d house. Such octagonal churches in antiquity marked spots of special significance to early Christians. For example, the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem was built in an octagonal form by Emperor Constantine in the fourth century A. D.; supposedly directly over the cave where Jesus was born, the authors note. Beneath the octagonal church in old Capernaum, the archaeologists turned up a house, originally built about 60 B. C., the authors say, that was probably St. Peters house where Jesus stayed. Part of the evidence cited for it is that something happened about the middle of the first century A.D., about 20 years after Jesus time, that niatked this house off from others in the town. once lived. By George W. Cornell The Peoples Eucharistic League is a Catholic group in which members attend church every day to keep up a perpetual crusade of prayer, according to the Rev. Fredrick Roberge, moderator of the league in Utah. Father Roberge said members of the league believe that besides actions of charity, visiting the sick, helping the poor and consoling the afflicted, they can also do much with the master himself by their knee action kneeling in prayer for all their needs. Although the Utah Peoples Eucharistic League was officially established Sept. 13, 1981 by the Most Rev. In Utah, there are now about 175 members, most of whom reside in Salt Lake City, Father Roberge said, adding most of these people go to Sacred Heart Church, 948 S. 200 East, where Father Roberge serves as one of the pastors. Members of the Peoples Eucharistic League pray at Sacred Heart each day between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. Members of the league not living in Salt Lake City can fulfill their prayer duties in their own Catholic Church.
