Saturday, d Tribune Church Editor "Resolved: Mormons Are Christians," was the title of a debate Tuesday night, but participants agreed nothing was really resolved, nor would it be resolved, even if there were weeks and months of debates. In fact during the question-an-JJwe- r period, Rev. George Nye, the Negative speaker told a disgruntled jjpnember of the audience that to be- .r. Prof. Eugene England Defends Mormonisra 1983 I the scriptures which state in part, "By their fruits ye shall be known. Mr. England said he wanted to "affirm how we are all Christians," saying the term Christian designates those who follow Christ; those whose creed includes belief in Christ; and those who live a Christian lifestyle. "Its ironic to be called Mr. England said, fit that criteria. Mormons saying To arguments Mormons are not Christian because good works are a requirement of salvation to them, but not a requirement of Christianity, Mr. England quoted the New Testament itself as saying we are not saved by grace alone. Points Out Abuses He pointed out abuses have been found among both the proponents of being saved by grace alone and those who advocated salvation through works. Such Reformation leaders as John Calvin, who believed people were saved by grace alone carried that theory to one extreme, while the beliefs of Johann Tetzel. a Dominican priest who sold papal indulgences, during the 16th century carried the good works theory of salvation to the opposite extreme. He said Mormons do not believe salvation can be bought through works, adding they very much believe salvation is given to all who believe on His (Jesus) name. However, he said, it is realistic and logical to believe salvation comes through grace, works and ordinances. He pointed out Mormon's ideals are as high as those professing Christianity, pointing out that both the Bible and the Book of Mormon encourage people to love one another as Jesus would. Mr. Nye. in his speech for the neg- flieve either of the speaker's stands ;)ook a leap of faith, adding faith 'Cannot not be argued about with a -winner being determined. f The debate, sponsored by the Foundation, was held in the !Krt and Architecture Auditorium at ihe University of Utah before a packed house. Speaking for the affirmative was Professor Eugene England. professor of English at rfirigham Young University and a llormon bishop. Speaking for the Negative was Mr. Nye, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Salt Lake Sun-Inton- e !ity. Baptism Criteria f. Mr. England, opening the debate faid a simple test of a religions 'jjlaim to Christianity is whether the feith baptizes in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost. "We meet Shut criteria, as well as others." Mr. jfcngland said. lle said Jesus Christ himself gave a test, that being found in ij followers c u I ative said although there are many groups such as the Mormons who are well intentioned, they do not fit the Christianity criteria. He pointed out Mormons do not fit the definitions of Christianity as set forth in the Apostles Creed and the Nicaean .Creed saying Christianity has given assent to these creeas. He pointed out Christianity believes there is but one God. all knowing. all powerful but Mormons believe In many gods, even believing man can become a god himself. Mr. Nye said, "Between two and 1,000 gods is only a quantitative difference, but betwen declaring there is one God and two is an essential difference." Height of Arrogance "To ever dream of becoming a god like God is out of the realm of possibility and is the height of arrogance, Mr. Nye said. Mr. Nye also said Christians have a "personal relationship" with God. who is a spirit, while Mormons deny that personal relationship and claim God is nothing mope than a glorified man. Speaking on the differing views of the trinity, Mr. Nye said Christianity believes God is three people in one substance, manifesting himself as God, the son and the Holy Spirit, whereas the Mormons believe the trinity is three separate beings. nitv f 23-2- 6 house-to-hous- g g Jehovah's Witnesses from Utah. Some of them have now returned home, others will never return home. What does it mean theologically speaking? Is it a sign of punishment? Perhaps a test of faith or a sign of the return of the savior? Or maybe it's just a sign the weather has changed. Speaking to some area ministers, most agree it's only a signal the weather has changed, after years of dry conditions. The Rev. The separate General Assemblies voted last June to endorse the reunion plan, with presbyteries (area governing units) ratifying the action in February. The Presbyterian Church U.S. with constitutional res marquirements of a its gin among presbyteries, approved the plan by nearly 86 percent. All 151 United Presbyterian presbyteries voted in favor.
